It is, of course, the owners' right to do as they wish but it is good to respect the real history of a locomotive or carriage. Creating a false identity can also be fun sometimes - hence my compromise suggestion which allows for both.

Perhaps it's time to create a Campaign for Real Industrials (or whatever you want to call it).

We could have an award for the best restored industrial each year and perhaps more importantly a wooden spoon award for the worst! We could write letters to the mags all the time extolling the virtues of industrials and so on... I'm game if anyone else is!

Given the fact that Sir Nigel Gresley spent some time at Philadelphia then I would suggest that there is more historical accuracy in doing just that than the vast majority of these psuedo BR/GWR/J94 things doing the rounds.

Please can someone do a photoshop of SNG in NCB North East Area blue just like Gamma was when she was at the Shildon cavalcade? Wish I was good enough with photoshop to do it!

We considered something similar earlier this year- to complete the transformation the loco was to be renamed 'Sir Arthur Scargill' and 'Bittern' would be renamed 'Coal Tit'

Could also have the 'I'm not a Namer I'm a Number' category.

The Road Roller Association do something similar for conversions back from pretend showman engines (yawn) to rollers. £250 or similar isn't much when you reduce the value of a traction engine by £10Ks but it is the right thing to do.

Definitely sounds like a good plan, how about Association for Real Industrial Steam Engines (ARISE)? Yeah ok, not a particularly good one!

ARISE! I like that - nobody else has yet come up with a better suggestion (open the floodgates hopefully)

SO then it's decided the first meeting of ARISE (or whatever it will then be called)to take place at the Tanfield feb coal train day. Nominations for the comittee?

    Suggestions for first awards?

The 'Revenge is Sweet' award for anybody who paints one of the two surviving J94s in NCB livery? ;)

Does Tanfield qualify? After all, its not a proper industrial railway like Foxfield, Sittingbourne and Middleton.  Come to think of it, what other ones are there besides Bowes & Chasewater? No doubt someone will produce a much longer list!

Well if you want to be pedantic we'll do it in Marley Hill shed - 100% industrial, it's had industrial steam in it every year since 1854!

Surely L2 wouldn't take too much to achieve as an industrial J94 - you could do that with vinal.

I must admit that the idea appeals to me,Industrial locomotives tend to be the only loco one guy can manage on his own unless he is very rich. They also tend to be preserved for there own sake and not for the money they might earn, notable restorations for there own sake should be rewarded. Who in there right mind would spend endlesly on a crane tank? yet people do,they do it because it needs to be done for pure preservation purposes and more power to them.
The thing that pi$$es me off the most is the amount of societies that start with an industrial and as soon as they can they ditch it for an ex mainliner (often a branch liner) It saddens me to see "warwickshire" at Kidderminster surely it has been on the valley as long as almost any loco,What future is there for that poor thing i ask?
I think that psudo BR liveries on parafin burners too for that matter display the frustrations owners and not any desire to preserve. J94's and willis jeeps they both have more preserved than were actually made.

    God help us

Looks like there's some genuine demand for this to actually happen! Perhaps if we could get a few like minded people together at the start a letter or two in the railway press may enliven intrest.

Putting aside my little quip about Tanfield not being an industrial railway and should be excluded, I agree that it would be a very good idea to have some form of organisation for industrial locos, to share knowledge, patterns, etc and I'm certain Middleton would wish to be involved, if not the individual loco owners.

Real industrial railways....or at least use part of one..

I am sure there are more but how about these for starters:

    Appleby Frodingham
    Ayrshire RPS
    Chasewater
Tanfield (well a short bit!) but superb use of a BR line!
    Middleton
    Chatham
    Foxfield
    Sittingbourne
    Snibstone
    Leighton Buzzard
Bristol Harbour Railway (although some of the route is GWR)
Pontypool (The bit over the bridge) but it will all look look good with the Falmouth tank next year..
    Rutland

    and onto the more obscure...

    Twyford
Threlkeld - did it ever have a railway?
    Kew Bridge
The gun powder place in london..sorry tired..Waltham Abbey??
    Laxey Mines
Scottish Mining Museum - is it still going?
various ng mine railways in wales, cornwall etc.

    And with some industrial heritage:

    Llanberris...Ravenglass..

And what Elsecar or was that the mainline to the colliery??

PS I thought the Kent J94 was going into LMR livery..Errols revenge!
