Being honest Steve, I can't remember... I suspect it's a corruption of 1 1/3 that's got rounded down by some inspectors.

David Wright has been very busy; he has just finished installing a new CNC machine which will make firebox stays in-house. Around 75% of the stay holes in the firebox sides have been tapped for new stays, and the remains of the crown stays in the outer wrapper are being shelled out. The copper tubeplate has been smoothed out, which means using little hammers to remove the dents left by the big ones. The blank for the foundation ring is about to go away ...for water jet cutting and with a little luck the new bunker shell will arrive on Friday.

The group is well advanced with the loco, we're now at the stage of doing 180psi steamings in preparation for the visit of our boiler inspector to (hopefully!!) give us the magic piece of paper. We've still got some jobs to complete before we can run and some jobs that we'll complete over the winter before 3193 is fully restored - our finishing line is now in sight - or rather we're moving from restoration into maintenance.

Sunday 8th saw the first day in normal service for Eustace Forth at Foxfield. Before this she had only been out for the two galas this year. Performed well and an easy master of the task of four trains and an extra round trip to Foxfield colliery to take coal wagons for loading this week. A very economical loco, free steaming and plenty of power.

Progress with the overhaul of Manning Wardle 1762 and 2009 at Ruddington continues. Hudswell Clarke No1682 is currently awaiting final machining of the new cylinder block prior to fitting up into the frame. On 2009, cylinder alignment checking has revealed that unfortunately the block is mis aligned in the frame, with the left hand side dimension between axle centre and cylinder block centre approximately 5/16" longer than the right hand side. This evidently stems from the fitting of a new block at Corby into the frame which was significantly distorted by a major rear end shunt. The mounting bolts for the block are now being drilled out to enable the block to be repositioned and the frame plates between the leading axle and the block to be straightened.

Superb progress everyone. Lady Nan looks superb. I only hope that it's younger sister can look half as good as this when it is finished

We had hoped to steam her today but minor problems with painting a couple of tank fitting leaks prevented this. Photo below taken today.

    What a beauty!
I can at least say that I have more parts arriving for British Gypsum. Slowly getting there!

The new bunker has arrived and has very kindly been moved into the maintenance facility for fitting out; steel bar delivered by Twiggs for making coal rails. The big ends and connecting rods have been assembled on the crank axle and crossheads, about the last job on the motion will be to pull back the piston rods and drive the cotters home. Mick has been working on the piston rod lubrication, which used to be on the hit or miss drip system from pipes waving in thin air, now the pipes are much more firmly clamped and lead to trimmings over the rods.

We undertook an in house steam test yesterday which showed up some steam leaks. These will be fixed in the next few days with a repeat in house test to follow.

As some might know I am restoring British Gypsum back to running condition and I am wanting to know if anyone has any photographs of the engine when it was at Carnforth or even when it was running at Kirkby Thore that they wouldn't mind sending me? I am trying to get as much visual information to work from as possible.
    Thank you

    Bagnall 2746 The Duke

The Duke passed its second bump test on Saturday; the first one involved marking the limits of travel of both pistons on the slide bars by reference to the ends of the piston rods. The second involved Mick and Simon fitting the piston rods into the cotters, driving the cotters home and yours truly turning the wheels one full revolution with an atlas pole to check the actual limits of travel, which in this case gave a margin of between 3/16" and 3/8" and Alen pronounced it a pass. One of the cotters and its crosshead require further adjustment and the piston rod joint was split again with Alen's crosshead splitter.

There is a story behind that worth telling. Alen began his career at Derby in time to see LMS No. 10000 wheeled out of the works and in due course made his way to Kirkby in Ashfield, where the splitter was used on Midland 3F and 4F locomotives. These share a certain amount of mechanical DNA with the austerities, as Hunslet built a batch of 3F tanks; perhaps that is why the splitter works so well on The Duke, three strikes and they're out. It is a massive piece of steel with a subtle curve, a bit like an elephant's tusk.

At any rate, while Simon was splitting the joint Alen was heard to remark that he was never much good with a hammer himself, unlike his Uncle who also worked at Kirkby. Apparently there were certain broken windows at the shed which were caused by the trajectory of crosshead cotters from 8F freights after getting the Monday treatment.

Monday is the technical name for a 28lb sledge. You only feel strong enough to use it at the beginning of the week.

John has completed the making good and re-fitting of the rear coupling hook, both the hook and the hole in the buffer beam were badly worn and needed welding up and dressing. Mick has been working on the lubrication system, Mike was cleaning up the pressure and vacuum gauges, Tony has been painting cladding sheets in the comfort of No.2 van.

Following an unsuccessful in house steam test a couple of weeks ago and following attention to the problems last week, today we had a successful in house steam test. We will now arrange to present her to the boiler inspector for an annual and ten year ticket.
