Would any of the extinct tank engines of the Lms ever be thought of being done as a new build. Are there any that would be good for heritage lines such as the churnet valley or peak rail etc. With the standard 3 and g5 being done. And many new builds for gwr there isn't much for the lms guys. Except the patriot which Im already a member of. Could it be something the patriot society could do once that is up and running. Like the A1 trust is doing with the p2. What are your thoughts.

From a previous thread about which engines you would like to see built, I recall that the Fowler 2-6-4 tank was mentioned quite a few times.

Thought that the concensus was that the Standard Class 4 as a re-design of the Fairburn Class 4 2-6-4T was the best option and there are already quite a few in active service

I agree that a Fowler or Stanier engine would be best. There are quite enough of the BR engines at work, it would be difficult to see how a new build engine of this type could generate enough interest to finance it.

There's always the long-buried Fowler 2-6-4T which is supposedly buried alongside the M1...

While it'd be great to see an LMS tank replica (especially a big Fowler or Stanier tank), I can't help but feel the idea is a little nonsensical when the perfectly useable (4)2500 is sitting at the NRM... when was it last steamed?

I'm fairly sure I recall the NRM saying they wouldn't have a problem with it being restored for use in principle.

How about a an ex North Staffs loco perhaps a Kerr Stuart 0-6-0 side tank which was LMS 1602 or a class M 0-4-4 tank. It looks as though class New L No.2 at the NRM will never be restored.

Jeff if any group of people at the churnet were to start that i would be straight in there to help out. I have good money raising ideas which Im using with the patriot. Has anyone at either churnet or foxfield ever thought about doing one?

It puzzled me for years why no-body was very keen to try and steam No.2 as a flagship for the Churnet Valley (Such as the North Norfolk's B12 etc), then one day somebody told me that (contrary to its size and appearance) even something as small as a Jinty would run rings around No.2, and that was why it would never be restored. Apparently it would struggle with 3 Mk1's! Therefore it would not be able to pay for itself in heritage use...

Did they substantiate this statement? Seems to be a bit of rubbish to my simple mind. I've heard other reasons as to why No.2 hasn't been restored to working order, though, but it will be up to others to comment.

I was careful to use the words "somebody told me" and "apparently" - it was all of course mess room talk!! So no, they did not substantiate their statement.

I am certainly no expert, perhaps others with more knowledge could shed more light.

It would appear very very strange, that the North Staffs loco could not pull more than 100tons? a 12 Inch Andrew Barclay could do far better.

This story is nonsense. If the 'New L' were to be restored the restorers would find that it would pull a train of seven BR Mk1s quite adequately.

Reminds me of a certain Hunslet salesman who was convinced that the Quarry Hunlests were most unsuitable for anything more that short trips. The Bala Lake railway were told that they would never pull loads over the 4 miles. So even the best of us get things wrong..

If that is true, then I clearly stand corrected :) It's nice to be proved wrong, especially as (from my previous information) I thought the loco was worth nothing other than a nice exhibit. Maybe then it could be steamed for heritage use one day like the Greyhound was, it's certainly the right proportions (i.e. not massive) for heritage use...

Apologies if this has strayed off topic!

Not at all. Im a volunteer at the churnet and i want us to have a tank engine of lms origin and the knotty one would be perfect. We have Gregs s160's but i think we need a tank appropriate for up north. I would love one of the ones from the lake side but that isn't going to happen. If/when all the lines completed to stoke leek and alton there Will be 28 miles or so of track making it a major destination for railway enthusiasts and we Will need more locomotives. And i think a new build with mainline certifications to get into stoke station would be an amazing thing to see.

I think the Knotty tank would be a good engine for taking 5 MK1's between Leek and Alton Towers!

As for LMS engines how about one of the Ivatt's from Havenstreet? The IOWSR would be able to spare one of them wouldn't they? :) However at the moment I think we have enough un-restored engines on the CVR to be getting on with for now...!
