NS cancelled their steam programme in 1992 in the middle of an overhaul of 1218, which was then cosmetically restored. N&W 611 which was retired at the same time looks like it will be restored to service, so maybe there is hope for 1218? But don't go holding your breath :/

The N & W class A is widely regarded as the best of the American articulated designs and it little short of a scandal that the overhaul was abandoned as it was. A few years ago there seemed to be little hope for J 611 (the best US 4-8-4 design from the railway that also had the best Mallet heavy freight articulated. That company had a very good design team.) but now see the change brought about by the passage of time. So, as Saggin' Dragon writes don't hold your breath but something may well happen. Not this year, maybe next or the year after. If the J is successfully relaunched that might spur enough confidence to make looking at the A a possibility.

Think I might argue the case for the NYC S1b :)
