You have to say the LNER's publicity department were very good at what they did, even when they cribbed ideas from the Southern!

That was the poster I had on my wall when I was about 14 when everyone else had the Athena tennis girl scratching her derriere... Looking back, I think the warning signs should have been obvious to my parents even then!

Apart from copying a poster, I don't think that they were in the same league as the GWR or SR, for their respective portrayals of the westcountry.

As an art form those posters were something else in my view. I currently have a calendar made up of various images across the years from the NRM collection publicising destinations around the UK. Most are just of the location but the resident artist in the house reckons that the best is the BR one advertising Wales that is one of the few in this particular set featuring a train. I'm not too certain about the stylised depiction of a Standard Class 5 but this is art after all.

Indeed they were not, but of course there was very little incentive for the LNER to feature artistic portrayals of the Westcountry!

I very much like the stylised art used in LNER posters.

Had a call from the east coast today confirming that the LNER claim that "Skegness is so bracing" was, and is, totally true.

Ahh the infamous Viz poster! They got in trouble for printing this and giving it away somthing to do with the jollyfisherman's image being owned byw Skeg council and by perhaps them not having a sense of humor! Viz retaliated by printing a snakes a ladders type board game 'How to survive a week in Skegness!'

The Peppercorn A1 shape worked well for the poster my artist did back in 2012 for my book. (Depicting 60114 I hasten to add).

Very nice it is too Simon. It came up in the search I did for my previous post, so had to remind myself of your previous work. All in the name of resarch you understand...

I hear on the grapevine that 60163's overhaul is taking a little longer than planned and she may miss her planned tours on 30th May (S&C for Pathfinder), 2nd June (York - KX for A1SLT) and 4th June (Surrey Hills Pullman for The Railway Children).

Latest news on the A1 twitter feed is that the boiler had an out of frames steam test on 28th April. Latest pictures show her still in various bits. The tender is finished though. It's going to be a close run thing..........
