Uniform jacket info

    I take it this jacket I brought off ebay is a station masters jacket it is doubble brested I have added the lapel badges but there are plain black buttons on it is that correct or should it of had the brass british railways buttons

    Re buttons I had a look at BTF film Single Line Working. One of the SMs has silver buttons. This is not definative. Worth checking other films

    Yes many of the old BT film unit are on YOUTUBE. I just did a search on "railway films" and found the one I was looking for, a southern region SM. No help as he was wearing an overcoat

    I do have some spare br buttons the silver ones another black plastic ones with BR on them but should I change them or are the ones on there origional

    Other than looking at old photos or old films there is only one definitive source I know of and that's "Frogats Buttons, Badges and Uniforms" Printed in the 80s copies command high prices even now, Somewhere in the region of £75

    Re. the silver buttons; I can well believe that, if an old railwayman had started with the LMS, and towards the end of his career was issued a replacement BR jacket with black plastic buttons, he might have cut the issue buttons off with a sneer, and sewn on his silver LMS buttons instead! Company loyalty was very strong amongst the old timers.

    Re. buttons; they varied quite a bit over the years, but the ones I've seen from the LNER, Great Western and Southern were all brass or gilt, but the LMS buttons I've seen were chromed.

    BR had their own silver and brass buttons so a jacket may have been issued with plastic ,silver or brasss. I will try to post a phot later

    Why sad? He might well have felt more pride in having worked for the GWR than he ever did working for BR, and who's to say he was wrong?

    Damn auto correct on my tablet. His station master in the 60s had Gwr buttons as he'd started off under that company.
