We were told that the "guts" of 1442 had been removed when we visited the museum many years ago as we asked if there were plans to return her to working order. Can't remember the reason they gave though for removing them.

How about motion/con rods? I don't know how the loco got to its final destination but, inm those days it would be quite likely to have gone some of the journey by rail and the conrods would have been taken down if it was being towed. If they're still ned putting back up , that is a possiblity. I've never seen the loco, though so can't really comment positively. In fact, it is probably the only existing ex BR steam loco I haven't seen. :-k

Last time I went there the bottom gallery section was closed off, so you couldn't get a proper view of the engine, mind you that might have changed now. You get an interesting view from the balcony though!

I have a recollection that the loco was reported as delivered to Tiverton under its own steam (& driven under supervision by the guy who saved it - a Lord Amory?). Later there rumour that the young DVR had an arrangement which allowed the swopping of parts to keep 1420/1450 in service provided 1442 did not suffer cosmetically. Perhaps that is how the "internals removed" idea comes about.

That makes more sense. I wonder what parts............. bearings? Pistons & rings? Firebars and ashpan? Regulator valve from inside dome? probably a lot more left than most projects have to start with. Not that I am suggesting she should be removed from her nice warm dry home.
