My copy of Steam Railway arrived this morning. It came as a complete surprise to see a "for sale" advert on the top right hand side of page 101 for black five No.44806. I believe that the loco was originally purchased from BR in 1968 by Mr. Ken Aldcroft, who died a few years ago, and the engine passed to into the ownership of his daughter . There is an e-mail address provided (dave.44806@gmail.com ) for any interested parties.

Coincidentally, in the same issue is an interview with Ian Riley, where it says that he "thinks there is an economic argument for owning six "black fives" such is the potential work for them...."

It will be interesting to see where this loco ends up. I'm sure there will be a lot of interest. I think that aprt from 45212, it is the only "five" purchased direct from BR which has never run on the main line in preservation, although I'm open to correction here. (I appreciate that 45428 has only run on the Grosmont-Whitby r0ute, but that still counts!)

I can well imagine that there will be a lot of interest, and I don't think Ian Riley will be the only bidder!

I would have thought LR would be very keen to hang on to this useful piece of kit. However it does make you wonder if they have passed it over,if its being offered on the open market... Interesting times!

LR has 3802 6430 7822 80072 in addition to 44806 to operate its service.
At most LR requires two locos a day.
Im sure IF they had the money several of the major lines that are short of motive power would jump at it.
But in these times of financial hardship its unlikely.

I heard at a recent photo charter that it had been sold and would be leaving the railway, but the buyer was not known.

The LLangollen is well off for motive power currently, but I doubt that will always be the case, most railways go through periods of being well off or short of motive power depending on failures, length of overhauls etc.

What I'm saying is that situation can soon change, 6430 for example is coming out for overhaul shortly.

The SVR have put an end to the speculation--including in the latest copy of "Heritage Railway" that 45110 may be sold due to the railways indebtedness, by a statement on their website today saying that 45110 is NOT for sale, and will be returning to display at the Engine House after 4930 Hagley Hall leaves the Engine House for overhaul.

If rumour control is to be believed, it looks like 44806 is destined for the NYMR. If so it would be a much needed addition to the fleet but, if its 'ticket' dates from 2007, its availability for use on Whitby services might be limited.

Yes, but does it matter? We've seen one or two locos drift away over the years (44767, 6619, 62005) and, a bit like the Mid Hants with the Bunch fleet, replacements have been brought in to bolster the wholly-owned fleet, but fortunately the NYMR has been able to acquire working locos rather than Barry examples. Steam haulage is one of the strongest selling points and it makes sense to try to safeguard the provision of that We've been fortunate over the years to have had some serious benefactors, but isn't that an indication that we have a railway that those benefactors see as rather special and worthwhile. There's nothing wrong with that!

Is there a problem with that.
Don't bite the hand that feeds you, or if you do, don't complain about being hungry.

Congratulations to the NYMR if true, that's one less 5 they need to hire next year and 1 step closer to self dependency.
As the post above says, they welcome benefactors...And reap the rewards

If NYMR purchase the loco, then I would ask what ever happened to 76079 once they got it - ran if for a while then never heard of again! What a shame on a very good and well mintained loco (prior to NYMR). Who is say that wont happen to 44806 if the sale is true? I suspect 44806 will need additional money and work to be done for mainline work to/from Whitby though.

The implication from your post is that, until it came to the NYMR, 76079 was well maintained but this has not been the case since. It's your opinion but needs to be justified or retracted. Can you do that?

As for 44806, it is not big railway certified and will need additional money spending to make it so. I don't think that's in doubt.
