I don't think so, for the forum as a whole at the moment, there are 73 members and 295 guests.

    Re: Galatea

OK, here's a little (more) harmless speculation. Looking at UKsteam.info for Feb next year, I see two tours around the Lancaster/Hellifield/Blackburn circuit:

    Sat 09-Feb THE LANCASTRIAN
    Cleethorpes-Lancaster (WCRC) [wcrc]
    44932/48151/TBA: Preston-Carnforth-Helifield-Blackburn-Lancaster

    Sat 16-Feb THE LANCASTRIAN
    St Neots-Lancaster (WCRC) [wcrc]
    44932/48151/TBA: Preston-Carnforth-Helifield-Blackburn-Lancaster

These would seem to me to be ideal "running-in turns" for something recently out-shopped from Carnforth. Since RTC's Winter CME is running on the same days, it could be worth popping out for a look, even if they they are "only" hauled by 44932 or 48151.

I'm sure all will be revealed - but probably not until the locos set off light from Carnforth on Saturday morning! Now then, there's a nice mental image: Friday night on Carnforth shed - a Black Five, a Brit and a Jubilee being prepared for the next morning's duties. Who'd have thought it eh?

The grapevice is already alive with rumours of light and loaded runs being after dark to avoid those pesky photographers....

Since when has darkness prevented good photographs being taken?

...granted you need a bit more planning and to ditch the puny on-camera mounted electronic flashguns in favour of something a bit stronger, but where there's a will! :) Lol example linky

(oh, and before anyone takes offence - I'm not suggesting going out to try blinding unsuspecting loco crew. Those who know me already know the type of snaps I take in total darkness!)

    What with 34046, 6100, 4472 and 5699,

2012 is a snails race to the finish line to see anything return to Mainline steam.

Well looking at the probability, i would say that 5699 will be out for a test run before christmas, then 34046 early next year , 4472 towards the end of 2013 and 6100 who knows, i would take a guess of late 2013 to early 2014 depending on what else is found when the boiler is lifted and the chassis examined

So, when did 45699's boiler have its out of frames steam test? Have I missed it?
Royal Scot's boiler has been out of the frames for some time.

Haven't been through all of this, but from previous Galatea threads is there anything evidenced within these 12 pages?

Nice enough pic, but it sent me looking for something better, and I found this. A bit bigger than a Jubilee, perhaps...

Well if you really want to start a conspiracy... who's to say a LMS Crimson 'Leander' won't appear for light and loaded test run and then get repainted and numbered afterwards..... ;) TOPS might be an issue, but I'm sure there's a way

Hehe! Shades of 6220/6229, or the true identity of Royal Albert Hall, perhaps? First appearence on April 1st?

Didn't 46115 run with tongue in cheek 45699 numbering for her test run?

    Re: Galatea

According to the rumournet 5699 was steam tested before 35018 was delivered, and boiler lifted to frames on the same day 35018's boiler was lifted... If all said is true.. That would be some months back.

Of course if could spot the difference between 5699, 5690 or 45231's boilers being lifted by a crane some distance from the shed... Then you must be good.

    Re: Galatea

Well all this is very entertaining but the fact is that Galatea is still inside Carnforth and until it's ready and pokes it's nose out, folk can speculate for ever. Be happy that someone is putting time effort and money into getting these machines into safe working order. I am and I don't mind waiting.

    Re: Galatea

Well yes, I agree that Winston Link's pics are more atmospheric.
My example was more to show how a vast space could be momentarily filled with light to take a snap. Taking photos after the sun's gone down doesn't necessarily need floodlights, a tripod and a stationary subject. (or a generally murky, flat and uninspiring on-camera flash lit photo)

...With planning and some effort it's possible to take impressive night shots with things moving too :)

Having said that. I suspect night test runs have infinately more to do with route availability and reduced risk of delaying other services should problems arise, than trying to sneak out unobserved by the anoraks of this world. The preserved railway workshops tend to do their initial test runs and loaded trials after the day's service trains have finished as well - the trainspotters don't seem to get their knickers in a twist about that in the same way though...

    Re: Galatea

Normally test runs from Carnforth do take place during the day as suitable paths are available on the circuit. So if this is going to be a evening/night run one can only surmise the reason.

The only bit of the usual "Carnforth test circuit" that see's heavy useage is the final sprint back up the WCML from Preston.

I see there's two competing threads on Galatea, so have merged together.

Interesting the 1st post in the other thread (April 2010), suggested Galatea was imminently ready to steam..
    funny old world.
