I think if they weren't so secretive there wouldn't be such intense efforts to get that first snap etc. It is a vicious circle.

Of course, it's their prerogative to be secretive. I just wonder if they didn't - quite deliberately, it has been suggested - put carriages in the way of the view, and have photos taken down, and suchlike, they mightn't suffer so much with people taking up the challenge of beating the secrecy. And that's human nature, so it's no good calling for people not to be interested. I'm not saying they need to issue updates, photos, etc., but if they said 'meh' when a photo was published rather than try to have it taken down (as it appears they do), they might not find themselves facing such vociferous efforts.

 

I think there is a fundamental difference between Secret and Private,
People who have a veracious need and appetite for the knowledge of what someone is doing in private just need to get a life and realise they are just nosey old so and so's with nothing else to do, now if i was Mr Smith i would turn it out with a scarf on and the headboard would say, "The Victor Meldrew special" then we could all say,
" I don't beleeeve it"

I'm with 'The Melter' on this one, it's somebody else's property and therefore it's Mr Smith's decision as and when it makes the press. Yes he may be smiling at the efforts that some people are going to to take a sneek peek but it must be rather irritating too.

Some people mention that its Mr Smith's fault that he attract's this unwanted attention because he doesn't let the press near. If somebody wanted to see one of the miniature steam engines i'm building in my workshop or wanted to see my model railway i'm building and i'd declined because it wasn't finishe, i'd be pretty annoyed if they then climed the nearest tree on public property and tried to take pictures with a long lens camera and probably straight on to the phone to the police. This i'm afraid is exactly the same situation.

I will admit that I too am drawn in by the progress on this loco (hence why i'm reading this thread!), especially with it's connections to Bristol Barrow Road, however I do not condone any pics that are not authorised by Carnforth or the complaints about infomation not being given to the general public on progress. I'm sure if you needed to know then you'll get the inside info, as i'm not one of those people i'll await the official picture!

For the record, I am NOT complaining about the lack of information. I've swayed both ways in the argument, and reached the inalienable conclusion that it is Mr. Smith's and WCRC's prerogative.

I was merely positing a few thoughts about the way the more something is hidden the more likely we as a species are likely to want to know about it. I think it easy to tell people to "get a life" but humanity is a naturally curious being - just as well really. Private/Secretive - it's an argument of definition. I think not letting on is private, actively bamboozling would be photographers with carriage rakes/removal of photographs is secretive. Whether it is wrong to do these things is a matter of opinion. But choose your own words.

 

It's a engine for heaven's sake. Everyone knows what one looks like so phone the police? I think you need to get just as much a life as those climbing trees with long lenses.

Spamcan, maybe a bit of an extreme example and I'm in no way suggesting the use of the police. Just saying that if people were taking photo's of my workshop that I would not be happy and would be concerned about their motives with the potential risk of theft. Now the intent of the enthusiast is not one of theft but the circumstances in which the photo's were taken would be exactly the same. The message I'm trying to convey is that Mr Smith/Carnforth is well within his/its right to ask people taking pics to remove them from public forums and if it was our own private property that was attracting the interest, then our own reactions could be a lot less forgiving than being asked to remove a photo. Official news is clearly not that far away! I'm just supporting the action's that Mr Smith/Carnforth are taking with regards to photo leaks and condoning the opinions of those who feel it is their right to be given updates of the restoration progress.

Well, all this is very jolly, damn good entertainment for an old man every morning over his coffee, keep it up lads, :tsk: OR, better still, give it a rest eh, because however much rambling goes on here, it isn't going to make a blind bit of difference to Mr. Smith/Carnforths policy/methods. And I say fair play to them, keep up the good work you Carnforth lads.

I know quite a few of the posts have been "tongue in cheek", a bit of fun, OK, fair enough. If I had any influence on the forum I would lock the topic until an official announcement was made because some of this is going to end in tears.

Aah, Bihar And Orrisa what a machine, sadly no longer with us. Those Farnley lads knew how to handle that thing . I sometimes stand talking with an old lad on Leeds station when some steam comes through, he was a fireman at Farnley and he tells some good stories, he shovelled a ton or three in to Jubilees.
