Guess it depends on whether one is deemed necessary and how long any fettling after today's run takes. From the operators point of view it would probably be ideal to do it while it is still hot so tomorrow or Thursday could be possibles if they do not need to let her cool.

Nice one Stephen and nice to see you briefly at Langho. It certainly was windy today, I ended up stabilising my tripod at Langho by wrapping my belt round it and the concrete fencepost!

Just a quick one on there only being 4 coaches. Could this possibly be the chance of fire risk still being a problem? It is still really dry up here and we still haven't had enough rain to stimulate new growth on the lineside.

Nice shots Ian, but what's with all those replies that are appearing on Flickr, not straighforward comments, just a graphic??

How many here think that one more test run will occur? I hope that those cylinders don't behave like they have been on these first 2 test runs.

Seconded, thanks for all the video of this event.

As mike infers above, 45699 looks as though it needs a little gland packing tlc before it ventures out again.

Superb "back from the dead" restoration though by Mr Smith and his team. All credit due.

Can I ask in what way did the cylinders behave during the first two test runs ?

I think Mike is referring to the various leaks from the area of the cylinders.

It may help Mike understand the possible reason for this quite common occurrence with Locos on test after valve & piston work. When fitting valve and piston rings into their respective seats on the heads, a common method is to jam them into the bottom of the grooves using folded paper or card 'shims' to reduce their diameter to less than the size of the cylinder or valve bore to ease fitting. When the Loco is steamed, the action of steam and water on the paper turns it back to pulp, releasing its grip on the rings allowing them to spring out and contact the cylinder bore giving a steam tight fit, it can take quite some time to happen and the resultant paper mush then has to find its way out via the drain cocks, glands( and exhaust), gumming them up in the process, causing the 'blows' and leaks so often seen.
    I hope this helps
    Andy

I think you'll find that at the temperature of superheated steam, the paper actually burns away.
