46115 reported on another forum as out of use due to a damaged cylinder. Does anyone have confirmation please?

Apologies if this is mentioned elsewhere, I have had a good look round but cannot find any mention.

I heard on the East Yorkshireman on Saturday, that it is having/had a stitch weld to the cylinder and is to have a steam test this week.

Sounds like Mr Smith may have to speak 'nicely' to the LMS Patriot Co. for the CAD details for the polystyrene pattern, to get a middle cylinder cast !

I understand that the cylinder had a similar successful repair some time ago, this has been a similar repair and is a fairly common practice.

Quite a few engines have had Metaloc attention to a cylinder, for some it appears to work long term but the casting is failed however you choose to look at it and a modern replacement should be superior to an original. And trying to hold on to life expired "original" components is not recommended, neither is not inspecting them thoroughly - the 4472 lesson you might say.
At least it is only a cylinder and not the Royal Scot frame issue.

Would the loco be due a heavy general in the near future when a new cylinder could be fitted perhaps?

Will the repair last to see two Scots together? Hard to believe that at one point it was neck-and-neck as to which would be on the mainline first...

I believe she is coming to the end of her ticket, unless of course she has had some boiler/tube work to extend it during one of her many 'rest' periods.

You could well be right. Seem to remember a post on here last year that suggested an intermediate boiler job had been carried out, possibly late 2013?
If its due for a heavy soon suggests this cylinder repair might be fairly straightforward otherwise it would be done during that.

When does her ticket run out, this year or next?

Can't say categorically yes, just presumed after the middle big end bearing disintegrated near Preston, I'd heard that the middle cylinder was damaged and required 'a repair'.... Back to hearsay again i'm afraid.
The result can still be the same if Mr Smith speaks 'nicely' to the LMS Patriot Co. and asks for the CAD details for an outside cylinder polystyrene pattern.:D

Metal stitching of castings has been around since the earliest days of steam and was a quite common repair for cylinder blocks; still is. It was common in BR days. Done well it can be as good as new. A list of those locos with this would make interesting reading, including at least one well-known Black 5.

Don't think he is keen on all this new-fangled newbuild shenannigans...
Hope the repair goes well and we get to see her and 46100 out together in the near future

Didn't the 'LMS Patriot Co.' Borrow Galatea's Driving Wheel patern?

I believe so, perhaps some sort of 'you scratch my back I scratch yours' agreement could be reached.
