With it being an Ashford built loco I would have thought that malachite green is a more suitable colour.

 

At a rough guess 85% of the paying passengers at Peak Rail will see 48624 in LMS maroon and say "ooh lovely, a steam engine". The Group who have restored it have waited a long time and are entitled to paint it as they see fit. Ignore the armchair paint moaners who, in the vast majority of cases, will have contributed nothing to the restoration either physically or financially. If you are within the owning group and unhappy with the livery then take up your complaint privately within the group.

It is not black - get over it and enjoy a loco that is no longer rusting in a siding unrestored!

Congratulations to the restoration team - I look forward to a run behind it sometime.

 

I think it will look striking. I hope the correct maroon shade has been used, unlike the recent "Red Scot" unveiling!

I intend to make it in my way to visit Rowsley when it is up and running.

Incidentally folks, why "8P" ? Tractive effort is 32440 lb, which 'aint class 8. "7P" maybe. A 7P Scot is 33150 lb tractive effort.

Ok, ok, the paint scheme isn't authentic, so it doesn't actually matter if it says 8P on the cabside.....

Just good to see it back in service.

Std Tank - you beat me to it as regards Ashford!

I believe 48624 was built in 1943 as part of a number build at non-LMS works (Swindon and of course Doncaster built some too) which makes it a bit of a star in its own right historically (without resorting to the need to paint it in LMS passenger livery - a livery which I will believe when I actually see it - not some photoshop trickery). However I do take acorb's post most seriously as I think he has put forward a very good case argued well regarding such an unusual livery - unlike some on this forum but that's what free speech is all about of course. As I said, if the colour scheme attracts publicity and funding then I can (almost) see why the owners might do it. But, paint is expensive. No one has answered my previous question yet regarding spray and brush finishing - is there a topic somewhere else on this?
Back to my armchair - well office chair.

 

Painting techniques have been mentioned before, basically most locos are brush painted. The only sprayed loco I can think of is 71000, and possibly 4771.

then maybe yes it's next repainting could be Southern Green.... 8F8624 perhaps ?

 

62005 was also spray painted I believe.

Hmm...thats an interesting point Martin. Bigger cylinders on the S & D, but lower boiler pressure, so maybe more tractive effort, but for less time. In fact there is a discussion going on about the S & D engines on "hilly" heritage lines on another forum, and steaming appears to be an issue. Not so much leeway with 180 lbs max, and the ex-compound boiler/firebox not as dependable as the Stanier boiler on the 8F.

Sorry, drifting off-topic... where were we? Ah yes, WHEN do we get to see this maroon beauty?

Thanks for the info regarding spray painting and brush finishing. So far the paintwork on 2807 has been done by hand, except for the tender which was used at the Llangollen Railway behind 3802 and was sprayed (yes-black!) with a satin finish which made it look ready-weathered. Anyway, going off thread sorry but thanks for the info once more.

 

Not unless KWVR declares itself as a republic and renounces all communications with the UK.. this one is in the country already.

 

But I always thought that Yorkshire was as different country anyway? The people there seem to think so ...

A Red 8F, what will they think of next? Soon we'll be seeing industrial 0-6-0st's in BR livery or even a 7F in SDJR blue, what will be left of our railway heritage? You know as soon as the livery is applied, the engine will cease to exist as the process of a lick of paint is NOT reversable, shock Horror!!!!
