What a pathetic attitude to have.

It's people like you who need to realise we arn't living in the steam days anymore, this is preservation, a newer era, why can't changes be made, why is a timeless shot so important? If the LMS had applied this livery to an 8F then it would be completely different, people wouldn't be complaining. It's not as if people are going to banish you from taking photos if you take some of this loco... it's the same with the people who wont snap 6100, both locos look fantastic, i couldn't give a toss if either was in bright yellow with smiley faces on, won't ever stop me from taking shots.

I'm glad not everyone has this attitude, otherwise we would have few images of 4472, 88, 6100, 35005 when in blue, freight locos on passenger trains, industrials doing the same etc.

Why is Frank's attitude pathetic? Just because he differs with yours I suppose. Chill out. It's his opinion and he's entitled to it. I'll defend the owner's right to paint it red but at the same time it doesn't excite me photographically.
It will no doubt be popular with Joe Public though.

  3. i must say i agree with frank! so please pass the bucket i am going o hurl theres nothing wrong with LMS black!

At the end of the day unless you try it you'll never know whether it looks good or not! Seeing something in the flesh is not the same as photoshop by the way.. I'm glad i don't remember steam days as it allows me to look at things with a fresh and open attitude as I haven't got this 'cloud of authenticity' following me about. I can judge a locomotive purely on whether it looks good or not (in my opinion of course, just as Frank is entitled to his). To me i think 6100 looks great and 48624 is going to look fantastically different too. As I said earlier there are other operational black 8F's about for Frank to photograph but it is a shame he won't open his heart for something a little different. Oh (probably should be whispering this) i quite like 4472 in apple green and deflectors too.....Runs for cover... :-#

Not sure how what he said was an opinion... nor what i said was opinionated, except for the last sentence in the paragraph i wrote. I just don't see how enthusiasts can not be bothered with a steam loco just because of the livery it's carrying... and to not even take a photo of it if it passes them... we should all be thankful that it will be returning to steam. I realise not everyone will like it... but to make statements like "my camera will never be pointed towards it" is just ridiculous. I still fail to see how having a picture of a steam loco in an incorrect livery is the end of the world.

Anyway, the 8F looks great, well done to all involved.

I'm not a product of steam days , far from it , Glam rock , flares and Diesels , however my interest in Steam is seeing a recreation even if it's in my mind and at 1/500 sec of how it used to be , and even if that view is rose tinted gleaned from the works of well known photogrpahers of the time . There are occasional exceptions , Corris no4 in BR black springs to mind

So it's my choice and everyone else is the same . All of us have limited time , money and an awful lot of choice so we go where we get the biggest enjoyment

Hopefully I 've said that diplomatically !

It seems to me that although it's true that a loco's owner can decide to paint an engine in any colour they want a photographer can take any picture they want that they find attractive. It's a matter of personal choice.

Personally I don't understand the virtue of putting 48624 in crimson lake after spending all that time and labour re-building this 8F from its Barry condition. But there you are.

Steady on, Kieran. "Pathetic" is a bit harsh. Different people want different things from the preservation movement. Those who remember it "as it was" and want to relive those memories have a different perspective from those born too late who are discovering steam for the first time. There's room for all of us. (Actually, though TBF won't go out of his way to photograph 8624, I bet he'd enjoy watching it go by if he happened upon it by chance - wouldn't you Frank? ;-) )

Looks good to me - I'm perfectly happy to see an ex LMS loco, pulling passengers on an ex Midland line wearing LMS passenger livery. An 8F in crimson lake is a historical anomaly but so technically is an 8F in regular passenger service, and since I can't see it earning its keep pulling wagons in black, turning heads in crimson whilst entertaining and enthralling the public is fine by me. More power to their paintbrushes. Its good to see all these variations being given a try out - maybe its a sign of a maturing movement that we're moving on from rigidly sticking to what was last seen, and using the locos that we've got to help show some of the differing liveries that have been used over the years.

It's all a matter of choice and calling people's opinions pathetic or ridiculous serves no purpose at all. Different folks, different strokes. I happen to think an 8F looks better in black. Not because I remember them like that; I only ever saw one 8F in service and that was so filthy it could have been pink under all the grime for all I knew. Some colours just seem to sit better on some locos that others in my humble opinion.

    Discuss!

How many misconceptions and anomalies can be contained in just one sentence.

Preservation is just that - preservation! - not the creation of something that never was.

If its not preservation, then its merely a branch of the entertainment business - albeit that preservation needs to be part of that world to fund itself; it doesn't need to forfeit itsguiding principles.

That is why LRV is the only one of the surviving members of its class still carrying its authentic livery, and why my Flairbird is having five figures lavished on its restoration to as built condition.

Its akin to hotrodding classic forties motors sixty years on, and beyond the pale for those with the eyes and discretion to see.

German style smoke deflectors and double chimney anyone, or am I getting mixed up with another loco?

If it was up to me all 8F's would be in filthy condition, that's how I remember them.

Well Frank you have made your point in your usual diplomatic manner, are you now going to fork out the money to the 8F boys to paint it into it,s alleged right colours?, I think not somehow.

I sometimes wonder what your reaction would be if peoply spoke to you with such comtempt as you do to others?.

    Regards
    Chris Willis

Well it's owners choice to do however they wish with their asset, all i'll say is (and im trying not to come across as a grump so n so, just a personal opinion) is that is doesn't give me a great desire to visit (and therefore give money to) Peak Rail as things currently stand.

Well i personally love the livery of the 8F, there's so many black engines around these days it makes a change to see something different. As for 6100, i think the red is outstanding on the locomotive, i was never keen on the livery myself till i saw it in reality and infact i much prefer the red livery to the green livery on 46115 (That's my personal opinion before people shoot me down).

Really looking forward to seeing the engine out and about, does anyone know how close it is now to steaming a passenger train? Hopefully i'll be down Mid - June to see it (well that is if its running).

I tell you what, it's certainly raised the profile of the engine.

And I bet that we wouldn't have ended up with an umpteen page thread on 5322, if we'd just painted it green. (Not that the khaki was done as a publicity stunt.)

Well I was absolutely sure that (4)8624 would be painted black. Shows how much I know! Personally I don't agree with it but since I haven't put any money in to its restoration then that's just my problem. It's good to see another Barry loco restored and the 8Fs were such a common sight towards the end of steam that its too easy to dismiss them as just a humble freight loco. As the paint job will be expensive (whatever colour I presume although the lining will also take more money (and skill)) the Group must think its worth it.

I'm throwing my hat into the ring here. I think its good to see the more unusual or 'brighter' liveries on locos such as Royal Scot's maroon or Flying Scotsman's apple green or pre 1948 liveries. 48624 in maroon looks suprisingly good if a little bright to my eyes so there :p . On the other hand I do feel irritated when I find out about a Austerity or any industrail loco being painted black and being given a BR number.
The final thing is I find it so stupid that peoples blood boils over what colour a loco is painted bcause it is surely better to have a loco running in an unauthetic livery that still rotting in a siding in the rusted remants of BR black

I would really like to see it at the head of the SVR's LMS set of carriages. 8F's are handsome looking engines and LMS crimson suits Stanier lines very well personally I think it's quite a natural colour to paint it, how about a matching black 5?! I do find it quite sad really that people would avoid travelling to a railway just because of a coat of paint but there again this has been happening at Paignton for a number of years so I probably shouldn't be surprised. Riding behind 88 at the West Somerset gala reminded me just how well suited the blue livery is, much more interesting than black. Unless we try these things we will never know..and if you really want an authentic 8F then quite frankly you will never know what colour it is as it will be under a layer of grime! Maybe Peak Rail can grime it up at a gala to tempt Frank and David1984 over with their cameras, remember 34027 at the SVR's S&D gala in grimey Hogwarts Maroon?
