The mighty machine is out and about on the mainline tomorrow. The timings are published on the Royal Scots Grey website. Back on it's stamping ground in the afternoon, Dep. York down the ECML.

It's still the most fabulous and distinctive sound ever heard on a railway!

I enjoyed seeing it so much Saturday morning I went and stood in the wind and rain yesterday to watch it on the ecs to Crewe. First Deltic I've seen on the main line since they retired, then twice in one weekend. Fantastic stuff.

I can remember when Gerry Fiennes went to the BR board and said "We need 3000hp+ please", I remember them when they were putting in 1000 miles a day up and down the ECML. A still summers night, 2 engines running, you could hear 'em from many miles away.
    Damn fine machines.
    Happy days.

I live but a short distance from the GN and it was great to leave the bedroom window open and listen to them charging into the night on the heavy overnight trains. As you say Victor, you could hear them for miles. Happy days. Just imagine if Gerry had got his Super Deltics of 4000+ horse power.

Martin Walker has filed a report on last weekends outing, it's there for all to see on the website. He says that the the loco.was running at "design speed" =100mph, on quite a number of occasions, there were no mechanical problems all weekend.

Happy days indeed - Chips from newspaper sitting by New Southgate station and watch/listen to the sleepers roar past - or a fine spring day near Claypole when you could most certainly hear the Napiers for a looong time, made the lack of steam almost (but not quite) bearable :)
