I've heard rumblings that problems have surfaced with Leander's firebox, which will likely take it out of mainline action for the coming year. As it's the only operational 'Jube' I'll be more than a bit disappointed if it's true - does anyone else have any information?

Funny that. Last time it was out with 44871 I noticed it was pumping out black smoke whereas 44871 was white. I wonder if that had any bearing on it?

I too have heard she's been taken out of service. I'm told her ticket was to expire this coming November so she's just been withdrawn for overhaul early, as it probably isn't worth doing repairs at this point. Understandable. Just so long as she isn't stored for 20 years like the other Jubs, eh?

So for those who like to see a pair of jubs its a few years to wait.

But potentially in a few years time three together...

Presumably with nothing else requiring overhaul/maintenence at Carnforth now attention can turn back to Galatea ?, Jubilee's have grown on me after having Leander on home ground up the Lickey.

Would 5690 be likely to be overhauled at Carnforth or Buckley Wells ?.

From what i've read elsewhere, Clun Castle is at least 18 months away, so that means your looking at probably in excess of 3-4 years before Kolhapur turns a wheel in anger.

mm Forgotten about kohlapur,so give it 5 years that could be 4... whilst theres no guarantee that all will happen or that all will end up on the big railway with the return of several light Pacifics and a pair of brittanias in the coming years there might be a couple of black fives short of work...

Unfortunately, Leander is no longer an ELR engine, so Buckley wells is out of the question for overhaul, unless the Beets decide to return to Bury. It'll probably be done at Carnforth.

Ian Riley could do the overhaul, remember there are 2 workshops at the ELR!

Depends if he has a slot to fit it in. He has got one or two other projects on the go at the moment.

I do not believe that any problem with a firebox is likely to cause black smoke. Black smoke occurs when the fire is burning inefficiently, when a fire is burning well the smoke will be practically invisible. What you probably saw was the fireman in the process of building up the fire on 5690, when black smoke occurs, whilst the fireman on 44871 had already done so - or was about to.

It was evident 5690 was having steaming problems in the latter stages of “The Buxton Spa Express”. Following a reasonable climb of Boars Head bank from a standing start at Wigan running beyond there to Preston was surprisingly only in the 40’s and 50’s. North of Preston running again was only in the 40’s and the train was put into Outbeck loop to allow Leander to have a “blow up”. Little did I realise at the time that this may have been its last outing for quite sometime.

Well, you can stop rolling on the floor, for a start! Then, you can ponder how a loco can pump out white smoke!

There is also the chance of Bahamas being ready by 2015. So we could see 3 Jubilee's on mainline service by that year??

According to the May RM, Leander will now undergo a 10 year overhaul, even though a year was left on it,s ticket. The poor running on the BSE was due to poor coal and serious firebox problems.

So that means it definitely will not be doing the Weardale run in October. I hope it is replaced by something a bit quicker than the 8F of last year, I heard it spoilt the trip along the ECML. How about ...............?

Well it would not be any quicker but it would make up for the failure on Blyth Spirit last year.
