Are they not a bit too wide across the cylinders for Carlisle? Im sure 5972 clouted the platform on test in the '90s

The last time I saw 5972 on the S&C was in December 1991 when WCRC ran a Christmas special from Hellifield to Carlisle but I think that no Tyseley Hall has done so - only Tyseley Castle 5043 plus 5029 (1993 / 4) and 6024 (1998)

December 2001 I think you mean Fred. Didnt 7029 do a tour to Carlisle in the late '60s but also had to come off at Howe and Co sidings though? Or am I confusing the 2?

Think 7029 worked over the S&C Carlisle to Hellifield in October 1967. A 50th anniversary run might be possible. If only the 9F that took the train on from Hellifield were available too!

Six Bells Junction has 7029 working the Preston to Rome St. Jct. (Carlisle no.11) and the Carlisle to Hellifield legs of this tour on 14-10-1967.

Nope ! but we're both wrong wrong as the date of 5972's trip that I photographed was 19/12/1999 although I understand it made another Christmas trip whose date I cannot recall. The 7029 trip I had forgotten but that was when I was confined to work activities in Northamptonshire.

5972 double headed with 48151 over the S&C in both directions on 30th July 2005 with 'The China Bear Rescue Special'. I'm not sure if there were any special arrangements for the loco around Carlisle Station, but 5972 was the leading loco.

I did a Kinlet Hall and Rood Aston Hall double-headed trip from Crewe to Carlisle and back during the 8o's (I think) - cant remember the exact date. Speeds limited to 60 but the accelerations were something else!

They fitted at some point as 4965 + 4936 have been over Shap to Carlisle previously, prob very early 2000's from memory.

Edit: 18th May 2002 according to here: http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/00s/020518vt.htm I remember seeign 4965 with a GWR style Caledonian headboard in one of the mags.

In 2005, No. 5972 made it in to Platform 3 and travelled the full length in both directions.

However, I'd raise a point about the difficulties experienced in early 2014 in regards to A4's being restricted from Carlisle Station. I cannot remember if this was due to engineering works changing the allowances, or lack of testing in recent months so NR playing safe, but it seemed to have been rectified in time for the Scottish Lowlander in September. Whether or not Halls would experience a similar issue now, well, you can only ask those at Milton Keynes!

Always happy to be proved wrong by those better informed than myself. Gauging can be a rather 'intresting' issue shall we say! What seems to fit one week dosnt the next according to NR 50's now longer fit in Cornwall! And going back a few years didnt 6024 work out from Padd to somwhere then on its return hit a bridge?

IIRC that issue at Carlisle affected 8 wheeled non-bogie tenders, so in theory all LNER Pacifics were barred...

Thing is they could keep changing the loco if other owning groups want to earn a buck whilst other locos are out of action awaiting overhaul.

For example, all this time 4920 has been decaying, it could be doing this in the future when 5972 goes.

I guess Mr and Mrs Public would never know, not a bad idea.

But hang on, so that would be... a hall pretending to be hall pretending to be a castle?

    I need another drink.....

Problem is once Warner brothers realise instead of spending £100k to make one out of wood, but that there's a steady stream of them available to masquerade, you could see them all being bought up on the cheap....
Halls aren't exactly the White swans of the preservation movement, the main liners struggle to find much work...with 1 exception.

I reckon how long it will stay will dependant on if Carnforth think they can make more money out of it in overhauling and running her than getting a fee for her to sit in warm, dry environment.
