Is it a really dumb question to ask whether its possible (or should be) to get something like that through a boiler test un-noticed?

There isn't realy a winner here - all of those involved have committed a lot of time to preservation, and it serves none of us well to see this sort of rancour. I can only hope that the mechanical problems are soon fixed, those who are perhaps at fault can act with due humility to accept that, and those who have been wronged can be big enough to move on if due apologies are offered.

Ok its happened, learn form it, do what ever is needed to ensure that 6023 goes on the mainline and becomes a reliable popular performer that is all we can ask
It doesnt matter how long it takes to do as long it is right
All this will soon be forgotten about and consigned to the recycle binor seconhand mag rack
We have waited this long for 6023 a little longer wont hurt
Go for it Dennis & team

Reading UK Steam yesterday I have noticed that 6023 has been added w/ 6024 for the steam dreams Cathedral Express to Cardiff on March 1st. What is up with that? Are repairs going along better than thought? I'm thinking that this might be an error. However, this would be a pleasant surprise.

Currently 6023 is being stored outside seemingly without work being done upon it (I base this supposition upon the photos in the Didcot Movie thread). Perhaps before being sure that serious repairs will need to be undertaken they are leaving the boiler for a bit to see if if tightens up of its own volition? Since the completion of the overhaul it has worked hard, perhaps an idle bedding in period was required?

I'm not a boilersmith, just thinking aloud.

I was under the impression that a boiler lift was needed anyway , it could well be that the engine might have to wait till a third party has inspected the damage before repairs can be started ? one thing is clear though, dont matter who is to blame something has gone very wrong , When a boiler is repaired does the insurance company look at componants or the quality of the work before the cold test is done ? because as i see it,there seems to be little safeguard against boiler shops either cutting corners or using below spec materials if they are tempted to try it after all once your boiler is in their hands how do you know what is being done is to the correct spec, most of the well known ones such as pridams and rileys do produce fit for purpose work, but what about all the others?, i am not saying that the boiler work done on 6023 was not to standard or anything like it, just wondering what can be done to prevent and protect against such things happening again?

But you are assuming that something is drastically wrong, when it might just be not uncommon teething troubles a bit of fettling and settling might sort, that have been blown up out of proportion online and in the media. I don't know either way, but the thing is none of us do.

with respect two parties do . the restorers of 6023 and the GWS .

    Martin Butler

Boilers are repaired to prescribed standards with work agreed by boiler inspectors and insurers . Main Line Boilers are subject to very stringent regimes . Your post and the insinuations you post , you should to be very careful . The work was done on 6023 by a Boilersmith working from and based at Didcot , who up until this point had a good track record of Boiler repairs , both for GWS use and Main Line

Equally these are increasingly old boilers requiring increasingly complex and extensive repairs . Teething problems will unforunately occur that need rectification . Witness 46100 and 60103

True, by my use of 'us' I meant uninvolved parties. Until such time as proper a definite statement issues forth from those that do know, we can only guess.

I was thinking out loud, but in hindsight to do so was a touch rash. We don't know until we know, so I'm going to shut up.

The problems with 46100 and 60103 are nothing to do with the boilers and I would not call the problems teething problems either.

There's absolutely no way an unsafe boiler on a locomotive not steamed for over 40 years would be signed off to use without parties agreeing to independent assessment prior to use...

what is it exactly your implying ?

This engine went to the Mid Norfolk for testing... a successful test is one that identifies a problem. It did, it has, it will be dealt with,
There will always be a negotiation over the blame, professional negotiation happens behind closed doors, occasionally when opportunistic, going public can be used to sway a negotiation opinion to one that the favourable to the one going public, but can equally back fire if the story isn't quite correct.

We are not involved in the negotiation, we are just being used to sway influence an opinion during the negotiation by reacting to a public statement.

I was referring to the amount of use the boiler has had i.e. the number of steam cycles that it has been through. It has been in steam a lot.

There is a piece about the dispute/problems with this loco in the latest SR. Not particularly pleasant reading, talk of sabotage/theft etc. What is the railway preservation "industry" coming to?

...it's been that way for a while. Look at the number of MK1 buffet cars that have been done in over the past few years. About two or three have been robbed in a very specific manner, not metal thieves, there was a load of class 31 spares that seemed to be nicked to order a couple of years ago and I read other allegations of theft from diesels. Theft is everywhere and people should never be suprised when it happens these days, only when it doesn't. What is more worrying, and I haven't yet read the article is sabotage... that's an altogether new and more worrying idea to entertain.
