71000 Duke of Gloucester returns to action!

Well, this 7 1/4" gauge miniature 71000 DoG has after a four year restoration. This model really is a work of art. The attention to detail is superb. The video appeared on my YouTube home page on the TV. I thought I would share this video on the forum:

The sheer level of detail on that beauty is just stunning. The sight of the Caprotti gear 'doing it's thing' is something else again. A very enjoyable YT! Channel and every new clip released cheers any day up. :)

... and just the sound of it! Chugging along like an old diesel with deep, clear puffs.
Would like to hear it with a substantial load at speed on the road.
    Astonishing work!

Anyone know what happened to the 5" version from the same builder? At the time he said he would follow up the 5" one with a version in 3.5" as he said he was getting a better understanding of how to miniaturise the cams. I never heard anything else about the third one.

Will hopefully have some video of the miniature next month.
Was due to have road trials today at my local club but I was unable to attend.
John has done a fantastic job on the rebuild of this magnificent machine. It visited our club many years ago arriving in the back of a Ford Cortina estate, creaking under the weight!

The 3.5" gauge one was on display at the Harrogate model engineering exhibition a few years ago. I think there might have been a gauge 1 version but I might be dreaming that

I think a substantial load might be more vehicles than you think. I saw it hauling 8 bogies with minimal effort

I'd love to see it over Italy and take on the climb on Guido's railway. That would make it sing a bit.

Wasn’t an April Fool spoof a few years ago about taking the 1:1 scale one over to Don Caprotti’s birthplace?
    Could be interesting!

The mods to the tender are interesting. Moving the fillers where spilled water won't soak wheels and bearings sounds like something they ought to have done 65 years ago!

Installing connections for 71000 to use Vintage Trains' converted GUV water carrier opens up some mouthwatering prospects for itineraries. Of interest, what is this GUV's max rated speed?

They're the low level fillers fitted so it can be tanked under the wires, not the normal one on the top of the tender. A preservation mod rather than a BR design.

Was any such mod used on the LMR generally back in the day? Thinking of those diagonal lines across lower cab panels applied to steam locos working under the wires in the 60s.

Nope. To put the bag involved a climb on to the back of the tender.

It must be at least 75 mph as both Castles have run at that speed (and maybe a tad above) with the GUV behind.

Indeed, handy for the duke as its water capacity is relatively small but can carry a lot of coal. Imagine you can get quite a long way on 6,500 gallons.
