71000

I ended up at Culcheth as someone decided to unload a truck with a Hiab on the lane to Astley crossing...

Yes it had a 67 on the front, 71000 in steam though so not sure whether the 67 is going all the way with 71000. Came past me around 12.23.

Any particular reason for the upturned rubbish skip on the front? Looks as if 71000 was still doing some work.

 

Is there a reason why 71000 keeps getting 67s with it??? I assume on this occasion to save water/coal???

Apparently 71000 is to be piloted on every LE move as the water saving reduces move times so much that towing is more economical than a solo move

Yup - the lunatics have taken over

 

Why the surprise? Paths are at such a premium these days that removing the costs and delays caused by water stops makes perfect sense for the longer LE movements, some of which are rediculously long, though perhaps more for DBS and their greater diesel fleet than WCRC.

Looking at the times for the return there's plenty of time in the stops to take water.... Having a 67 in the consist to me adds to costs hire of it with fuel and driver for the day.

Surely Saturdays run did not make enough money to cover the LE moves ?.

 

I suspect that availability of steam crews is also a factor in diesel pilotng the loco+POB moves. 71000 only operates with DBS and so movement under her own power would require a driver, fireman and inspector (with probably at least one crew change en route as well).

 

I would back-up Malc on this - don't forget that route knowledge can also be a factor, needing to match drivers with route knowledge and steam knowledge. I know this has been a factor leading to diesel haulage in moves for 60163 and 60007 (I think) undertaken by DBS in the past.

"Piloted" is probably the wrong word, "hauled" is probably more appropriate as 71000 shouldn't be under power. I don't know what DBS's requirements are for this sort of movement - whether they require one of their own personnel to be on the footplate, or whether a member of the support crew can look after the loco, but I doubt very much whether both a driver and fireman are required. And, as Bean-counter says, route knowledge is another factor. One only has to look at the number of footplate staff DBS used on Saturday (at least 9) and the geographical spread of their home depots (Hither Green, Crewe, Bescot, Eastleigh, Bristol) to realise that supplying steam crews can be an issue for DBS.
