1472: The 82XXX block will be 17.5 x 26, the Standard 5 is 19 x 28, but you are a bit premature anyway.... unless it was Brian's secret winter project. No, he was doing the wheel pattern.

Finding a pattern maker is one thing, but the cost of it all is quite another.

Were lessons learned at the time in terms of fixing the plugs? What is regarded as best practice now?

The pattern for Taw Valley's new cylinder was produced by Cerdic Foundries of Chard in Somerset, who also did the casting. The machining work was done by the West Somerset Railway.

Apart from 34027, several other engines have had new cylinders manufactured inlcuding 53808(88), 60163 and 71000, together with at least one Terrier and maybe others (?). As far as I know these were all produced in the UK, but by several different organisations. I believe a cylinder pattern for 45xx/4575 prairies is also being planned. This will be used for new cylinders for more than one engine. Then the likes of 6880, 45551, 82045 and other new builds will also be requiring new cylinders in due course. Fotunately the art/science of cylinder casting in the UK is still alive.

Shenton's cast a pair for the Saint back in the late 90's, with the machining done at Bootham's. I can't remember who made the pattern though, same place as the wheels I think.

A pattern for a small prairie cylinder exists and a new set of cylinder has been produced for one of the two at Llangollen due to one of the cylinders being cracked. They are currently awaiting machining and can be viewed in llangollen shed carpark.

I imagine the next question of the day is where the cylinder drawing is located although i imagine being a standard the drawing will be a damned sight easier to find than the cylinder drawing for the grange what was a little bugger to find (Thank you NRM).

A great pity this had to happen and on a gala day of all times. Good luck to the team down there and hopefully she'll be back soon.

Make the core plug a very tight fit as it screws into the piston.

Chris to be completely honest I think its you who should back out of this one, at what point have I said anything that will do me no credit?
To me 73096 is the only loco in the world I actually care about and I'll be at the forefront of people helping out repairing her, I'm not going to just leave her just because another loco is coming out. If this happened to 6024 (first loco that came to my head with a following and obviously touch wood nothing like this will happen to any loco) you wouldnt see there members running off to help 6023 they'd stick by the old girl and fix her the same applies to me and 73096 so I'd like it if you could cut the attitude towards me please, also I'd be interested to know what your comment actually relates to from my posts?
And for those wondering as soon as the contract expires you wont see me leave her as for me she is just as much part of the reason I'm at the MHR to work and not anywhere else!

well it looks like some people have a very blinkered view of railway preservation, and I thought we were all in this together...

Crying shame about 73096, cracking piece of kit, and lets just hope it isn't too costly to repair!

Ok maybe that was a misjudged comment to make that I dont care about any other loco but 73096 is the one that i look out for the most, as you would if you were part of a loco society

I do understand your point of view. If you have spent years involved in an engines restoration it becomes the most important loco. That does not mean you wish any others harm or that you want take an interest in others and support other groups but it is the one you focus on. I have personal experience due to previous and current partner and the locos that they have spent decades involved with. With my current partner 6695 will be his main priority until he is too old and decrepit to care.

Exactly the point i was trying to make, now 73096 is out I'm going to be doing whatever I can to help get her ready for any work that may or may not take place or at least keep her in as best condition as possible until she does get the work done. Or though I never personally got involved with 73096's restoration ever since I first started helping my grandad out on the trains when I was 7 she was my favourite and when I first started work in the shed at 14 she was the first loco I worked on and also the first loco i fired a round trip on, she has just grown fonder and fonder to me to the point now where dare I say it I'm probably closer to than a lot of my friends and family. When she failed Saturday it brought me to tears! surely this is what railway preservation is about when realistically something can make you feel emotions like that towards a loco and ultimately caring about the railway you work for.

I can understand where you are coming from. There are a couple of volunteers at Tyseley who
have quite an attachment to 4965 having been with her for the last 10 years or more.
I have only been in the preservation movement for 3 years and the engine I've grown attached to
is Peckett 2004. I don't understand why but over the months I've spent working on her I've come
to regard her as "my" loco.

A salient lesson than a relatively small part coming loose can cause so much damage.

I had wondered why there was so much insulation scattered about on the linesdie in the Youtube video. I can see why now - the whole underside of the cylinder was shattered.

    Regards,

    Dan

Hello, with the damage to 73096 on the 14th does anyone know who will be replacing her on her services? I looked on the rosta online but it hasn't been updated yet?

Just curious, wondering what I'll see and if its worth a wander for a photo op!?
