Thanks Ralph I rode behind Alycidon once at the NYMR gala my 1st time behind a Deltic what a brute of a diesel loco and very lovely engine sound. My dad copped all the Deltics on the ECML apart from Black Watch at Doncaster station.

    No, it doesn't :(

Time to see if I can get an extra day of work to donate some of my pay to it.

Some of us can't access facebook. There's nothing on the DPS website as yet.

Edit. I've seen the report and basically it says it's not going to be a quick fix and it's going to cost a hell of a lot of money.
The people (because there is at least one female volunteer, Beth)at Barrow Hill WILL sort it, but as always.........it's the money that's the stumbling block.

Incident with D9009 on March 3
The failure of DPS-owned Class 55 D9009 Alycidon on the southbound ‘Auld Reekie’ rail tour from Edinburgh which saw the locomotive failed at Berwick has turned out to be more serious than originally thought. Initially, two traction motors were isolated at Dunbar following a loud ‘bang’ but difficulty in obtaining power saw the driver call it a day at Berwick.

Subsequent investigations have revealed a large power surge has damaged all 6 traction motors and one of the two main generators has also be affected. The damage is not consistent with what could be termed a ‘normal’ flashover where current arcs from one brush box too the next. There is a burn mark on the roof of D9009 and also on the inside of the engine room roof.

It is highly probable that the six traction motors will need to be professionally repaired, necessitating lifting the locomotive to gain access to the bogies. It is not known if the affected main generator will require similar attention. Should this be necessary, the complete power unit will need lifting out and the generator removed.

The DPS has regrettably had to inform Pathfinder Tours that the locomotive will not be repaired in time to run 'The Harrogate & Humber Deltic Reprise’ on May 11 but hopes this tour can be scheduled at a later date.

The DPS wishes to thank DB Cargo, the operator of the ‘Auld Reekie’ tour, for its exceptional co-operation and assistance with this incident.
Investigations continue to establish the cause of the damage.

Meanwhile, a special crowd funding appeal has been launched as D9009’s repair will run into many thousands of pounds. Well wishers who want to see this Deltic back on the main line are invited to make a donation - please see www.thedps.co.uk

Not good at all, let's hope Alycidon will be back to full health again in the not-too-distant future.

Is there anyone on here up enough in electrics to explain how this power surge akin to a lightning strike could have happened?

Edit - anyone know the bore and stroke dimensions of a Deltic engine?

The memorable tour for me behind Alycidon was the Elizabethan in 2012...I thought our goose was cooked (a bit like the overhead wires) when we came to an abrupt stop and flames were seen shooting skyward...but we ran onward to Edinburgh and touched 100mph on (if memory serves me correctly) more than one occasion. The return to Kings X behind Tornado wasn't bad either...

Ah, that was the trip where my wife and several others were stood on the platform at Durham waiting to join, but the train sailed through on the Down Main... They were told to join the following train, which was only a couple of blocks behind the tour, to Newcastle, where the tour was held awaiting their arrival. A good piece of Control, iirc, as it avoided delaying the scheduled service.

There is a video of Tornado departing Durham southbound in the evening - 13 on the drawbar and not a hint of a slip, unlike poor Blue Peter in 1994...

We went down to York to maximise mileage, and were as surprised as anybody, as we sailed over the viaduct into Durham at line speed!!!

Was an awesome day out, but one I find hard to replicate, on a modern railway.

That's how I remember D9009 on my first mainline steam tour - it was hauling the outgoing leg, Tornado on the return.

Now diesels have these super-bright lights on the front, can we have a 'Deltic' in the future in green with NO yellow warning panel, please? That's how they look their best IMO.

Who cares what colour it is, as of today I'll settle for a Deltic, both engines working and 'doing it's stuff'

    Just now we've got nowt.:(

And the silence from LSL Crewe is deafening...............what are they doing with RSG and Gordon?
A green Deltic without yellow panels ?? Certainly sir:-
    [IMG]

My personal choice ?? I think Alycidon looks better with the small yellow panel.
