It was made very clear to the LR in its early days that to try for Ruabon would severely compromise any council cooperation with trying to get anywhere!! I have no idea why the councils took this stance.
It could still be done but would cost huge amounts of money and the route is becoming more fragmented all the time - the councils have refused to protect it in line with government 'policy' saying that any protection is pointless as the route is already breached in many places.

Getting back to the original subject of this thread, an extension into Bala would be extremely beneficial to the railway & the town. It might encourage more people to stop in the town instead of passing straight through. The funding should be made available, after all it's less than a mile (I think) & would really improve the railway's profile. A town centre terminus would probably increase the railway's revenue, especially if it could reach somewhere like the old station site or the Lakeside Cafe.
It would however be a major civil engineering job ,with one or two rivers to bridge.

Excuse me!!!!!!! But i never said anything about destroying the Bala lake railway. I would like to see the railway return to bala (although i understand it most likely wont) But you could actually do a really nice exchange like there was once at Waterhouses on the Leek and manifold at Bala Junction. So before you go on shouting at people get your facts right. If you talk about attitudes maybe you need to look in the mirror.

As I said, it would be a wonderful boon to railway and town, but would have to be done on outside investment - WAG perhaps, in more brighter economic times?

An expensive extension into an industrial estate on the outskirts of the town which would compromise the existing very simple out and back service from the southern terminus which requires no staffing elsewhere with no evidence to support a significant traffic increase but would produce greater operating and maintenance costs - yup this makes sense - the WAG cannot even find the money for a Ebbw Vale to Newport service.
