TWO hundred workers facing redundancy at Bombardier's Derby plant have been given a stay of execution.

An increase in refurbishment work being carried out at Litchurch Lane means the company has deferred the deadline for the job cuts to September.

Bombardier announced in 2004 that it would have to make more than 500 redundant by April 2006 unless it found enough work to take it through to late 2007 when it starts building new trains for London Underground.

Around 300 contract and short-term staff have already left, leaving 200 still facing redundancy.

They have now been told their jobs are safe until September and "possibly beyond" if the company wins one or more of the four contracts for which it is bidding.
