But always take cover when there is a sudden burst of thick black smoke from an oilburner, usually a sign that the fireman has just added the tube cleaning sand.....

Which reminds me of a true and, to some, funny story from German normal steam days.

Some UK gricers had arranged with a German crew of an 01.10 pacific the location where the tube cleaning sand was to be put in, so they could get a very claggy photo.

But something about the location was lost in translation. And the crew were a short distance out.

It was NOT seen as funny by the German Frau who had just hung her clean washing up in the garden adjacent to the railway.

Back on the Explorer and moving from things oily to things steamy, Stanhope station - not exactly a common location for steam trains from the national network - was a truly awful experience because of the atrocious weather. It's actually rather nice (I think!) but all you could get was atmosphere with No 9 out of sight off the platform.

It was the same last year, Al, as the "Weardale" departed with the K4 in charge. She was well off the platform end & round the curve too. Although the weather was kinder, & we had time to walk up to a local hostelry for refreshment :)
