having an interest in railway accidents i've been trying to research the incident in october 1988 where 2 class 31 loco's (31 202 & 31 226) ran away and ended up on the north circular road in london with 226 landing on the roof of 202 and breaking its back. from what i gather the handbrake was released or not functioning. my main interest though is how was 31 226 recovered. i know 202 was cut up on site but it wasnt until i looked at some pictures tonight that i realised that it happened UNDER a flyover road thus making the recovery even more difficult. was a crane used? does anyone have any pics of the incident or recovery?

    A bit of text.

The locomotives that wanted to try out the North Circular Road !
On 28th October 1988 two unmanned Class 31 locos, presumably with brakes not fulled applied, rolled off together along a short siding. After demolishing the buffer stop they ran down the embankment on to the main road, to the horror of passing motorists on the North Circular, although no-one was hurt. The second loco of the pair landed on the roof of the leading one, reamining precariously balanced. Its back broken by the impact, the leader of the adventurous twosome was later cut in two for reomval from the scene of the accident.
