This thread has drifted quite a way from its focus on current operations in 2023. That said, isn't it brilliant to see this interlude of images to celebrate what has to be the most memorable steam route in the land? Yes we can get excited about The Jacobite and its scenery but the range of locomotives alone must send the Fells to the top, especially with the accessibility of the route from many different locations in England.

Weather forecast for the weekend up north keeps changing. Shap now light rain and moderate breeze; Appleby thick cloud and a gentle breeze, chance of rain less than 20%; Wilpshire light cloud and a gentle breeze, less than 20% chance of rain.

And if you use Railcam you can have a real-time look at the weather at Ribblehead, Garsdale and Horton.

Seeing the photographs from the early days of S&C steam workings reinforces (a) the quality of some photographers whose work is rarely seen in public, (b) the distance many travelled in the day to take their photographs and (c) the variety of locomotives which have climbed their way over Ais Gill from either direction.

I took a look at the numbers for the climb of Wilpshire Bank and the power required up the 1/81.5 from MP17.25 to MP14.5 was steady at around 2575 edhp. The quoted maximum output (at the rails) for a 47 is usually stated as 2080 hp, so a minimum of 500 edhp must have been coming from 46115. If you repeat the calculation having first deducted the weight of 46115 from the overall weight of the train, then the power needed is reduced by . . . 500 edhp! Assuming that the 47 was indeed producing around its quoted max, then 46115 produced only the power it needed to lift itself up the hill - SG was in fact "taking its own weight" - fancy that, a "notch 1" on a Scot!

[Beyond the tunnel the train was allowed to slow and when it passed me on R&W station, 46115 had a silent, billowing exhaust and the 47 had been eased back as the summit beckoned.]

That's a bit harsh. There's no logical reason for you thinking that.

I thought 5C87 was a top and tail move but P3 doesn't seem to have another train on it before we leave. There's a freight through B so the stock can't be staying over there.

Not really, I'm just been cynical about the upcoming run on Saturday.
