Does anyone know of any coaches that are available for sale , that are suitable for a conversion project please ?

Must be on its wheels for transportation , interior does not need to be complete , but would need to be asbestos free .

    Many Thanks .

Are you planning to move it by rail, either to its final destination or around the site at its final destination? If not, then I would suggest that buying a grounded body would be cheaper and probably easier to transport.

As an enthusiast can one say that some of those Bluebell Coaches look to be in pretty desperate condition. The scrappers torch cannot be far away!

Far worse has been restored over the years, problem here is will anyone bite the bullet and restore them? I’d like to think that sleepers remain represented in preservation outside of the NRM but apart from using as volunteer sleeping accommodation the uses are limited.

Even as sleeping accommodation, there have recently been better options such as the MK3’s which were ready to go, don’t require restoration and probably work out cheaper when restoration costs are factored in.

I see that the Mk1 SLC , sleeping car ,at The Bluebell ,seems to be the only survivor of that type , ie sleeper composite , I know there are other sleeping cars at
Carnforth , but likely for parts only , anyone interested in saving 2442? , be a shame if it went for scrap , and has had work done on it too.

Thanks Tom , just been looking at surviving Mk1 sleepers on railway heritage register , few survivors , a few spares donors at Carnforth ,
and many others scrapped , hopefully 2442 at Bluebell can be saved , it would be such a shame if that were to be lost , so eventually none would survive .

AFAIK only one Mk 1 sleeper was ever stripped of its blue asbestos content and then restored, that being the one owned by RVP at the GCR. If I am right then it will eventually be the sole survivor as I cannot see anyone else going to the trouble of stripping, repairing then rebuilding one of these carriages back to sleeper condition for volunteer use when Mk3 sleepers are relatively freely available.

The sleeper that used to be owned by RVP wasn't a Mk1, it was one of those 12 wheeled LMS jobbies by the number of 380M. http://www.rvp-ltd.org.uk/collection.php?vehicle=380

There are some old carriages at dawlish not being used back on a railway yet. The Devon centre also has carriages parked in its station but they put a narrow gauge down to start but there is room for them to put the
Big line back again one day I’d they feel like it

Sadly, looking at 2442 and the fact that it comes without bogies or wheels, I suspect that even if the 'figures in the low thousands' was swapped for 'figures in the low tens' they would hardly be swamped by offers.

Agreed. Why put such onerous terms on something you are trying to sell. Why not scrap one of those 'mission impossible" wrecks and donate the bogies/wheels. Would make it far more saleable

Don’t think the LMS bogies would fit a Mark 1?

I suspect the answer for anyone interested is to make what they consider to be a reasonable offer. AFAIK the railway has been trying to give away some carriages for twenty years with no takers.

Interesting to hear that. Would have thought such offers be snapped up; I assume they are some in need of serious restoration then?

Certainly things like LMS sleepers are often riddled with asbestos and are of little use, so in effect the purchase price is the cost of asbestos removal and transport costs. Likely getting on for at least £20k for a coach that still needs a major restoration that you can't really use for passengers. You'd need to be *really* keen and *really* rich!
