If it was the same stock as last week (SRPS?), That was steam heated. A water stop is a water stop, irrespective of location, actually there are no water stops mentioned on uksteam for the outward journey, only Wantage Road on the return.
Surely an engine change at Acton doesn't take 30 minutes, it was a 20 minute scheduled stop anyway without the unplanned engine change. Then seems another hour was lost from there to Swindon.

No I do not currently volunteer
It can do if there the locos cannot be moved because of service trains being given priority, the signaller in charge does not see a reason to hurry, or plain just cannot be ******* insert own expletive. Now if Mr Scott were there it would be a different matter.
Classic example last night, charter train out of Crewe, first stop Whitchurch. Stopped by signals at station en route, the signaller thought it was the all stations stopper because that was normally the only train he had at that time of night.....

That's what happens when the railway is managed by people from bus companies!

Yes I am an active volunteer
I'd certainly like to think so Ralph! I recall shunting 70000 pretty quick on its last visit to Worcester despite being given an awful path to do it in, so much as you say depends on the people involved. Sometimes big power boxes are much slower because the equipment is much more precise (if you don't stop in the exact place then you won't clear/occupy the right track circuit is a good example) but knocking an engine off and putting another one on shouldn't take 30 minutes.
