Fishing line.....when I was in the machine tool industry we used it, weighed down at either end and ran a scope along the guideways of large gantry milling machines. Myself and a colleague once got a 20 metre long bed within 23 microns.....even we had to wonder how we had done it.......

Understood. One question though, is this principle applied to all threads eg mhr / bunch, steam ban around York, changes at lnwr heritage / Crewe, discussion of wcr relationship with A1 trust etc etc?

A sensible question to which the answer is No but on the other hand "If the cap fits....". We all should know that even on a discrete and semi private Forum individuals are responsible for what they say and everything said can come back and bite a person (sometimes legally) in spite of the apparent informality of the medium used. Without going into detail, some posts on the FS thread (and a parallel thread about Riley Engineering) were becoming very problematic. So what was done was as much to protect individuals as the Forum owner.

The main message is therefore "Please think before you post"...and that's general and not directed at you! I hope that is helpful.

OK - the Scotsman thread is back, but with a number of recent posts removed.

If you post any comments please do not stray into matters that relate to ongoing negotiations between Riley Engineering and the ELR over future plans. This is so as to try and avoid matters that might be confidential and/or with legal implications. Thanks.

Have some more posts been removed from this thread?
Had Tapatalk notifications on my mobile about new posts on here this evening about an hour or so ago but they don't seem to be there.

Given the present situation with a few ongoing issues, & not just 'Scotsman', I don't envy the mods' job here at all. Ultimately they've got to come down on the side of caution, & that may well involve pulling posts, if only for review amongst themselves. I am involved in a couple of current affairs boards; it can be a minefield at times moderating them, especially when passions run high...

Are there any photographic updates anywhere? It would be fascinating to see the work done behind renewing the frames. Hasn't been done on an A3 since before 1964 in all probability.

Er ... did you read the previous post to yours?

Yes. Posts removed. Thread briefly closed for editing, but now it's back and everything all shipshape and Bristol fashion, what what!

Thought that was referring to the "clear out" last (Wednesday) night.
There seem to be more tonight according to my Tapatalk notifications.

As you may be aware we have had to remove several posts that were not only of a very personal nature but also bordering on libellous. So we have to make it clear that we are not going to allow National Preservation to be used as means to debate any issues between Ian Riley and the ELR, especially when there are suggestions of a legal nature between those parties.
We are having none of it and do not endorse any comments made by users on this topic, we will ban any user who goes down that route either for or against historical matters or the current situation between those parties.
NP will continue to monitor the Flying Scotsman thread to ensure that the debate does not go off topic... Which is Flying Scotsman's overhaul.
Please remember forum rules, that comments should not be of a personal nature (to living or deceased).
It is understood some other forums also have a similar stance on the topic.
One user has been already banned.

As legally you can neither libel nor slander the dead, why enforce such a rule?

Out of interest, what constitutes a comment of a 'personal nature'? I would have thought much of the West Somerset saga could be construed as thus?
