It says "comments should not be of a personal nature (to living or deceased)" the term libellous is only used earlier in the statement, and not, to may way of reading it, connected with the later sentence.

And some comments have been edited from the WSR saga, but in this instance it was brought about by what the mods considered a 'personal nature'. Actually defining it is very difficult but was reached.

Good manners, consideration for living relatives, and avoidance of flame wars would all seem to be legitimate reasons, doubtless there are others.

There is somewhat more decorum demonstrated in the WSR thread, than what was demonstrated in this thread about the parties the other night, and thats before anything kicks off.

Why does Nat Pres not want to be involved in this particular topic of debate ?

    1. history shows, neither party has a particularly spectacular relation with Nat Pres.
    2. Hosting a debate between supporters of either side probably isn't going to go by marquis of queensbury rules, there will be broken keyboards.
    3. It's a hassle the team doesn't want to be involved or deal with.
    4. When the subject inevitably descends into the abyss and smoulders in the dark pits of hell, we don't really want either party jumping out of it throwing balls of fire all over us..

Its already consumed more than 8-12 hours of collective time dealing with the agro... and the posts were up for minutes not hours.

Therefore, Inshort, politely and respectfully.., on the subject of ELR vs Ian Riley, please take it somewhere else .. not here.
One user already has had difficulty accepting this and had to find out the hard way.

Suppression of freedom of speech...? well both parties each have a closely related forum of their own they could use as a voice if they so wished.

Can we get back to 4472, or what ever its going to return as :) At least the snag list should be getting smaller and hopefully when she returns it will be an A1 condition, :p ok ok, A3 condition, what i meant was as new, but with later mods, hang on, that doesnt sound right either :(

But there are people who were really bad eggs so are we not to pass any opinion on their wrong doings even after their demise?

No. I'm not letting the right to free speech rest. I fully understand that the mods are in a difficult position and must ensure libellous remarks do not remain on the forum but if they apply the rules, as it seems they are suggesting, then some debates and discussions will become so sterile it won't be worth it.

I am going to be honest, I think your making a mountain out of a molehill. Common sense will be applied with regard to this rule so there isn't really an issue.

Maybe I am but I'm on forums where even polite posts are removed for "not adding to the discussion" and suspensions handed out for simply disagreeing with the admin team, I'm rather wary of any suggestions that open discussion may be curtailed.

    What right?

Their forum, their rules. Its their right, maybe even their duty to run things so we kids can all play in the sandbox happily together. The rules they find necessary to do this have very little to do with anyone's idea of what human rights ought to be. If you don't like it then you are free to go and play in any number of other sandboxes, or even start your own.

Its not just the admin team who have enough of a task in making sure we all play nice. You watch everyone jump on someone when the put forward and independant view that doesnt go along with what everything is printed and how everyone generally sees the situation to be. Im sick of being shot down by the Frothnado fanatics out there when I try to hint its not as good as they think.

Personally, I cant wait to see Rileys treatment to Scotsman. Bet it comes back running well after a run in month or two

Right enough is enough, there has been enough off topic discussion, now it is time to draw a line and get back to the threads topic which is the subject of Flying Scotsman's overhaul. Any further off topic posts will be removed so let's get the thread back on track.

Very surprised that the film crews havent shown up yet to make (yet another) documentary about 4472 and her 'definitely work this time final one honest' restoration. Although with unexpected engineering dramas, impending deadlines and ( for the sake of a good story) a landlord breathing down the necks its ready made reality television, almost a docusoap no doubt embellished with looks of askance, focus and determination, heads in hands, grimaces, tuts, tantrums, out bursts of prof***nity...

Any how, back to the Nitty gritty, will the replacement forward frame sections be gauged up to take up the material lost from the cylinder block ? ore are we back to shims...?

As this thread is now 143 pages long, and has bits missing. Can anyone give brief recap of what has happened / is happening with the overhaul. I refer only to the relevant overhaul and not the bits regarding who is at fault for Scotman's poor condition leading up to this point.

Also, as an aside, why are updates so few and far between? Is the loco being worked on, or has progress stalled?

The tender and boiler are still at the NRM York. The loco chassis is at Ian Riley's works in Bury. His latest update today on 'The Works' shows a new smokebox saddle and new frame sections ready for installation.
