I hope it is Middle Chrome Green or Deep Bronze Green and not Brunswick Green as stated!

I recall some years ago, driving past Churston station and seeing a large dark green (not GWR colours) loco on a low loader in the yard. I pulled into the station car park and my wife and I decided to see what was happening. After a while the loco - yes it was 60103 - was removed from the low loader. I had not seen that type of operation before and was surprised how quickly the loco, assisted by a small diesel, gained the rails in comparison to the time required to enable the loco to be removed from the low loader. As 60103 was a foreign loco to my more familiar GWR metals it was also the first time, other than newsreels and photos, that I had seen her.

Oh dear I do hope this is not going descend into yet another livery froth. It only a coat of paint. What most of us are waiting for is just to see her where she belongs, out on the main line....

Seems a good move, I'm not against the LNER look, but it has to be single chimney and no deflectors if going for that.

With the depth and attention to detail of this overhaul, it would be a hell of a shame to get that bit wrong !

If it comes out the same shade as 34051 it will be fine.

Technically, they could get the whole locomotive absolutely perfect as a recreation of her time in service by swapping her current corridor tender for Mallard's non-corridor tender - that would make 60103 authentic for her time in service from the fitting of the smoke deflectors in the 60s.

The corridor tender would be partially authentic for Mallard, if the valances were removed, but there's a hornet's nest and no mistake...!

I think 4468's tender is relatively close to ex BR condition whereas 4472's has been much modified in the recent past. Swapping the tenders wouldn't be a sensible move in my opinion.

I'm sure a decent proportion of enthusiasts don't really care that much and as far as Joe Public is concerned, as long as the nameplate says Flying Scotsman, then he/she will be happy. It will come down to bums on seats, and the general enthusiast and Joe Public will be the ones putting their hands in their pockets to travel behind her, and the type of chimney, deflectors or not and accurate colour don't really matter.

Aside from being in LNER livery, it was modified and restored for mainline use behind Mallard in the 80s, and again for the great gathering it was cosmetically restored. So I'm not sure that is close to ex-BR condition.

I do however agree with you on that however I was just postulating - many enthusiasts focus on the locomotive but the tender type does also affect the whole ensemble in terms of authenticity. Nothing more than a flight of fancy. :)

Can i take this off on a tangent, for a Mo to do with Flying Scotsman's tender and air braking set up, as the vacuum braking stystem is being replaced making her duel braked, has the system been redesigned along the lines of what the other LNER engines such as Bittern has ?

Thank goodness the NRM have come to a particularly sensible and pragmatic decision!

Thankyou Mr Coulls if this is in part your doing. Excellent outcome.

Awful decision by the NRM, terrible bit of PR as well. When (as will inevitably happen) the news crews turn up to see "the people's engine" turn out for the press, they'll be expecting the Apple Green LNER beastie. It's the colour 4472 should be in all the time, regardless of historic authenticity. It's the exception to the rules.

    Oh dear.

Let's face it to the general public:

Tornado = flying Scotsman when it's painted apple green

Bittern = mallard in its current guise

Green arrow = flying Scotsman in apple green

You hear people 'get it wrong' all the time but it doesn't diminish their enjoyment of seeing a steam engine.

Besides, it's been out of traffic for ages and there is nothing else that looks even remotely like it on the main line...

Putting its troubles to one side, when she steams and goes about her work on the main line it will be an advert to the NRM and will draw interest back into the preservation movement.

I'm sure it will end up Apple green again after a while...

It belongs to the NRM. Why paint it in an unauthentic livery? Do you think for one moment that any news crews are going to know anything about 60103 other than its
name. It's going to be Brunswick green, get over it and get a life.
