Huzzahs are in order for Steve Davies and the NRM staff, and Ian Riley for his good self, and his staff.

Looking forward to seeing 4472 in steam, more and more with every passing day. :)

News reports on both local tv chanels tonight showing boiler being reunited with frames, although I do wish they wouldn't refer to the loco as a "train" Interview with Chris Beet, but no sign of Mr Riley.

Easy enought to stop this. In an interview just interject that it's a locomotive and re-record the segment using the correct terminology. When a piece to camera is being recorded, loiter out of shot next to the cameraman and if necessary interrupt the recording. It's best to have a brief chat with the TV team, probably only two these days, before recording starts and explain the technicalities. Interrupting or stopping an interview is only hard the first time. Don't forget the TV team don't want to make mistakes. I worked with TV in the field of education off and on for years. Same issues about terminology were always arising. I once tried and failed to explain the difference in edu-speak between achievement and attainment to a reporter who was using the words interchangeably.

Anyone else get adverts asking "Need a new boiler?" when they clicked on the twitpic link?

When was that announced? Can you provide a link to a source please?
As I understand it, 35022 is only at Ian Riley's works for 'investigative work' at this time and no decision on her future has been made yet.

It's there "for evaluation and preliminary works", as said by Riley himself (http://intheworks.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1570). Doesn't mean the entire restoration will be carried out at Riley's works though.
If a loco is going to have preliminary works, that generally means a restoration is planned. Not much sense in starting work on a Barry hulk if you're not interested in restoring it. Seeing as there's a spare boiler from 35027, it makes sense to use it. Needs a new firebox, but that is possible (its been done before and is probably cheaper than building from scratch, if the rest can be reused). I would imagine the owner of 35022 and 35027 is capable of financing 35022's restoration should he go ahead with it after the evaluation. This is Jeremy Hosking we're talking about, look him up, and the other gargantuan projects he's tackled in the past. Bittern with its wonky chassis and Britannia with her iffy boiler spring to mind.

I'm well aware of who owns these locos and the extraordinary investment that Mr Hosking has made into the preservation movement, but you seem to have assumed that just because 35022 has gone to Riley's for investigation (which is just that - investigations, not 'starting work' as you have assumed), that somehow this automatically means that it will be restored - not so! The restoration of 35022 has NOT been announced and I think you should be careful about assuming and announcing things like this - rumours and opinions get spread and very quickly become 'fact' without any basis of truth! Sorry if this seems harsh but there are too many rumours started in this way.

Ummmmm...The title of this thread is 'Scotsman Overhaul Updates'. If you wish to discuss 35022 etc, perhaps you need to start a new thread.

True, or discuss it on the 'Bulleid Pacifics Past and Present' thread to save space on this forum.

I'm looking forward to seeing/riding behind 60103 one day, but my worry is that there will be a 'Flying Scotsman Premium' on railtour fares (although please note that NOTHING to this effect has been announced as of 29/03/2011). Whilst the NRM will quite rightly want to recoup their investment, the danger is that such a premium risks pricing the loco out of the everyday railtour market. But then again, if families want to ride behind this particular loco because of its fame, then they generally won't be too fussed about the price.

There's more than one way to charge a premium fare whilst maling normal fares affordable for the masses - think of the 229 club in the past for example. I don't think the NRM management would be daft enough to incur the wrath of the press by pricing tickets out of the reach of "normal" passengers. Presumably, for example, it will do a lot of trips to Scarborough, where fares can be kept reasonable.

We call it the people's engine. So hopefully everyone will have the chance to ride behind it on a variety of trains.
