I'm sorry too - I did not intend to go down this line in my post above. Just merely reporting people's comments about Flying Scotsman. We seem to be drifting away from Tornado, which is what this thread is all about.

One fine April the 1st they should slap on some transfers and different smoke deflectors on Tornado... and see how many muggles claim to have "seen the real one"

Sorry, I am a tease lol. Actually I'm quite proud that something I worked on in a minor capacity has achieved 100mph.* (Although what remains of what I did I know not). Not sure I'd want any of the carriages I've worked on going that fast, although many of them I'd be comfortable with them doing about 60mph.

Totally agree with you Tom. When I took these two pictures below on Monday afternoon (17th April) it was quite something to see the awesome appeal of Flying Scotsman.
When travelling on the 12.45pm trip there were plenty of kids jumping with excitement and several in my carriage exclaimed "I can't believe we are going to be pulled by the Flying Scotsman!" Some of these kids could be the future of Railway Preservation.
I was pretty excited too but being thirty something I decided against jumping about in the aisles!:)

Last thing on Scotsman here, I promise.

For me, Flying Scotsman has always been 60103. That's how I first saw her, at Llangollen, in 1994. It was the livery and form of my very first Hornby train - blinkers, dark green, 60103. Her return in the BR Dark Green made me so nostalgic for my early years. It has been a real joy.

For me, as an LNER fan, it is completely contradictory to my usual demands of LNER livery and pre grouping liveries on everything. But I make an exception for her - it reminds me of a very happy time in my life.

Same here, Mr. M: to me, FS is always 60103 :)

Funnily enough, I didn't mind either way with 4771/60800, and was lucky enough to see it running with both liveries.

There is an obvious compromise for all parties concerned. Borrow Mallard's tender, revert to single chimney at a later date, and paint her apple green, and number her 60103 in a matching livery to Tornado. A form more accurate to her history and also giving us something never seen in preservation.

I do rather think the existing LNER locomotives need to coordinate liveries more. The photographic opportunities and the railways available - Tornado, Scotsman, SNG and any other LNER locomotives available, on the GCR passing each other on the double track. Someone, somewhere, make it happen!

    Here's a thought - E103 as a running number and in Apple Green/British Railways?

Still love to see an A4 turned out in purple ;) - Mister 'osking, sir...?

Yes, just once in the experimental purple - would be a fascinating comparison. None of the preserved ones would have worn it, but surely we can suspend disbelief temporarily...if Silver Link can be recreated temporarily...

Can't see the NRM going to that trouble and it would still not be totally accurate unless you convert it to RHD

Is accuracy the thing with FS ? or is it just matching the reality as closely to our Memories as poss ? For me Flying Scotsman is 4472 has polished Smokebox door bands, is Apple Green, (no dc or sd)... because that's what my '00' Version looked like, and how she looked when she took me to Ravenglass, as a kid.
Apparently the Pegler single chimney has bitten the dust so putting a single back on would be an added expense, whatever the other excuses.

I guess we all have and treasure our formative experiences of FS. This is how I'll remember her: :)

As I spent hours in the 50s and 60s hanging about on GN stations from KX to Wood Green, the first 20 minutes below is how I remember her.
