I can see the point of some people saying that maybe it would have been better to build a brand spanking new one blah blah but at the same time railway prservation as with any other preservation is about exactly that PRESERVATION

Why Do People Place money into these things?

So see the world of PRESERVATION come alive and also for many people to be able to relieve many many WONDERFUL MEMORIES

I have even asked myself the question that maybe she would be better off as static display???

    Who Knows

What is known is that the work on the engine has been of a bit of bad luck with recent incidents but that can't be helped. It could have anything such as the latest HS1 units having a major failure.

It is done so what now let the restoration tem carry on doing what they do best restoration for preservation

Latest issue of The Railway Magazine (in shops tommorrow) has a story about the problems with 4472 and says that she will now haul her first ML passenger trains in Black. There is also a letter which says that the NRM should just "stuff and mount her" and send her round the preserved lines as a static exhibit!

There's a surprise! RE the letter in question, that's an entirely selfish attitude being purported there. Yes, selfish.

There's generations of railway enthusiasts to come who have been brought up on 4472 in the media and in model form - to suggest that the people in charge of Scotsman today, or those of us in the armchairs should take the decision to retire 4472 permanently, and effectively rob them of their chance to see her in steam in the future, is nothing short of disgusting.

That The Railway Magazine has chosen to print that doesn't surprise me: I'm all for having both sides of the debate aired but it's becoming increasingly clear that the argument is slanted in certain publications.

It's like saying the overhaul for Duchess of Sutherland, or Pendennis Castle, or any of the other major mainline steam locomotives is going to cost X amount, they should be retired because it costs money. :rolleyes1:

    [/rant]

On a side note, that's a nice addition to her duties this year, appearing on the mainline in black. That will be some sight, unusual no doubt (and not strictly accurate), but who cares if she looks and sounds the part while doing the job she was built for.

Don't you dare start another livery debate and you know how photographers hate black, their very expensive kit, they say, cannot cope with it......

    I don't have a problem with black :madgrin::tongue1:
Anyway, it'll certainly make the line up at Barrow Hill MUCH more interesting :thumb:
(looks like my wish in an earlier post might just becoming true!)

My only contribution to the livery debate is, can she go on the mainline with pseudo LNWR lining?!

Some varnish will sort that out! Second livery thought, what about lining her out like the road loco that forms my avatar?!

Well - if she's coming out in matt black then lets allow her to match it by banning all cleaning, so that when she does reach the main line after whatever running in finally occurs, she should have a fine patina of "work"

Wasn't it the Railway Magazine that supported the "Save our Scotsman" appeal that appeared to be ignored by all the other mags?

Iv'e not yet seen the letter in question, but totally agree that that sort of attitude is selfish. Otherwise, No apology needed IMHO.

    Regards, oddsocks.

I couldn't agree more! It will be interesting to see the response in the letters page in the following issue.

Good to hear she'll be in black on the first mainline tours. Not good about that t**t's opinion. What a stupid thing to say. Yes 4472 has had her problems this overhaul but it will be so rewarding for the NRM and the public when she does return one of my happiest memories of steam is 4472 flying through Slough the first time I ever saw her in 2000, I still tresure my picture of my 8 year old self standing next to her at Newton Abbott that same day. Hopefully Barrow Hill is still on for 4472.

Wonder if the NRM have got BBC's Blue Peter lined up for another bit of publicity like this from 1966:

    "Absolutely marvellous".
Interesting letter from a young viewer about the Isle of Wight "modernisation" at the beginning.

Just watched that clip, ironic that they said the "Blue Peter" steam loco is going to be scrapped! Also what was the Peak doing at Brighton? Especially in 1966.
