That is very sad. Roland was, whether you ultimately agree with all his decisions on the loco or not, a big part of Scotsman's history and possibly one of her longest serving engineers. You can't talk about Flying Scotsman's history without mentioning Roland Kennington. That says it all.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Met him on footplate experience day, at Tyseley with FS, in 1994.

Had a great day, and have recently managed to transfer tape footage to DVD, I put some clips onto Youtube ages ago.

It was 6 weeks after Blue Peter's incident at Durham, and he offered a professional opinion about the accident.

If I get the chance, may try and capture the clip, and post it.

in steam days , pacifics would sand the rails as they backed down thro' the tunnel to the platform . having said that , I have seen many engines getting in an awful stew trying to leave the station . worst of all was an A2 which took what seemed like ages to disappear the last coach. was probably at least 3 minutes jolly entertaining tho'.
I couldn't help a bit of a smirk seeing a vid of 6233 getting away with no problem at the X

just a couple of comments on some of what has gone before , I remember seeing FS on the turntable at top shed , with single chimney and no blinkers .that must have been before her last BR overhaul , so about 1959 I guess.

there is a transaccord record somewhere of FS running thro Basingstoke at about 70 ,in the AP .years---- whistle was screaming . now if anyone has a recorder to hand, blow upper D# and you will have a sound that is very close to her whistle , nothing like her current one .
the same bit of recording gives a superb rendition of Gresley 3 cyl. jazz

As reported in 60103. 'The Cotswold Venturer' - 28/10/17, FS should be repaired in time for the trip to Worc on 28/10, and the Norwich-based trips scheduled for 21/10 are postponed to 11/11. Just wondering where she'll reside between these trips? Presumably the plan would have been to return to York around the end of the month. The simple thing might be to rest at Southall, but a short-notice visit to a preserved line could be very beneficial for loco and railway alike. The NVR is the obvious choice or perhaps the Mid-Norfolk?

Yes and the post on the Cotswold Venturer thread also confirms she will be run in there....

Yes, I know where she is at the moment. My question / speculation relates to the period between the RTC trip to Worcester on 28/10 and the rescheduled SD trips from Norwich on 11/11. ;-)

Possibly the two most famous locomotives in the world meet in Wansford yard....

...the Riley chaps have stripped the motion, split the tender, drained the boiler and removed the springs ready for the arrival of two large cranes tomorrow to lift the loco and remove the middle drivers (well, that's the set they've taken the springs off, anyway). Taken from the platform at Wansford after foot-ex on 78018 this afternoon.

Get better soon 60103. That sight makes me rather more unhappy than it should, in all honesty. I have every confidence however in Riley & Sons given everything they have done for the locomotive, period.

Can't imagine any organisation other than Riley better placed to support 4472 given the intensity of its use. Hope they retain the contract to look after it for the forseeable future.

A bit of a sway on in the wind. Was anybody else praying "Please don't drop it"? Amazing how clean the axle looked when the wheelset was removed. She really is kept in pristine nick.
