Probably more to do a "look, we saw a steam train" for mates rather than a serious attempt at photography, though. I do occasionally use my phone in portrait for a smokebox close-up, addmittedly

If you are taking snapshots that will be viewed on a phone in portrait mode then its sensible to take them that way. Yes, you'll get more of the locomotive in if you rotate the phone, but the intended viewer won't thank you!

It all depends on the composition. For a front end view that's taller than it is wide, portrait is fine. It's what it was made for, but landscape mode is called landscape for a reason, but don't get me started on videos of trains taken in prtrait, where the camera is jumping all over the shop and swinging from side to side in an attempt to get both ends of the loco in, when turning the thing to landscape would do the job in one.

Funny, I've got a phone where if you want to watch something in landscape, I just turn my phone sideways and the whole image is there just fine.

Well, I must admit I was a bit disappointed that 60103 will not be reverting to apple green for her centenary year. But I hope everyone will forgive me for trying to find a little humour in the situation...:p

To add to the other comments already made; members of the human species very often fail to engage brain.

Nice one. Lovely light. Surprised you had any sun given how dismal it's been here today.

Well, that solves the livery debate. It has to run in black and white, like when it was built .

Here's my footage of Flying Scotsman at speed with the Cotswold Venturer yesterday. The first shot was near Chipping Campden before flying through Ashchurch in the evening doing at least 70mph+. Also included is 7029 Clun Castle with the Welsh Marches Express. I hope you enjoy the video.

I'm glad that I am not alone in this, I am amazed that so few use the landscape position. :(

I've never understood how so many folk don't pick up on something so basic, though I have to admit, with my photographic skills, it scarcely makes much difference!

It's as if they don't have a TV at home to give them the hint they need. Wide side goes at the bottom, narrow side goes at the side. Same at the cinema, but even wider.

Unless of course they've got the telly hanging on the wall at home narrow side to the top, so it's the right way round when they're lying on the sofa with their head on a cushion and a bag of crisps on the floor. It must be strange viewing the world at 90° to normal.

Still think the point is being missed. The object of the exercise is not to take a great photograph of a steam train. There are thousands of better ones. It's not even to take an image to remember the event by. Most likely it's for a social media shot for the purpose rather nicely described by the late pTerry as "I'm alive and so are you". The recipient isn't expected to look at the photo in detail, or indeed to be interested in the subject, it's just an electronic wave across the street to say hello. So presenting the recipient with a landscape image they have to rotate the phone to view detracts rather than adds value to the exercise. It's not that people are stupid, it's just that their motivation is utterly different to yours.

I can see the logic of both landscape for photos to keep and portrait for messaging. What I can’t see the logic of is those who put the phone at 45 degrees to take pictures. Do they think they are being artistic?

A staircase photographed at 45º surely just looks like a really uneven corridor, no…?
