Time between Heavy General overhauls varied between types of locos and, indeed, the Region they worked on.

Yes, I was going to make that point. I think in both pre-preservation days and preservation, you try to match mileage and boiler life so both need work at the same time. It’s just in pre-pres days, you might achieve mileage in three years that in preservation takes you (by design) ten. If you took a preserved loco and ran it 25,000 miles per year, it wouldn’t last ten years!

In the Collett era, the GWR moved to a flat 80k miles between heavy overhauls which was very forward thinking. It’s a fundamentally different way of thinking and resource planning to “shop when something breaks”. It also foreshadows how you do car maintenance now where you just do services at fixed mileages.

Cook’s book “Swindon Steam” is very interesting to read on the process they used.

Or a fixed time interval for those of us doing less that 4,000 miles a year, then it coincides with the MOT so you get a better price doing the two at the same time. :)

Some of the jobs on my Standard need doing every 500 miles. Just saying...

    Greasing?

I've been following that young woman Steph (idriveaclassic') on YT who's just bought a nice Standard 10. I think I'd want a boot-less 8 myself.

You omitted the crucial bit: "whichever comes first". Certainly was the case with oil changes on my first cars, oil changed every six months for a fresh can of original 20W/50 GTX :)

All very interesting guys, Yes, I watch the classic car shows myself I change my oil, and filter every 12 months regardless of milage, but things like plugs, cap, I do when the milage , or 2 years, comes but what's all this got to do with Flying Scotsman ?,

Yes indeed. I know the previous owner of that 10 fairly well but I don't think I've ever seen the car, he always seemed to bring his older Standard to shows I was at.
I've had one of my 10s for 33 years now. Couldn't imagine parting with it.
The bootless models are a bit less practical but the split folding rear seats are quite unusual for a 50s car. The 8 has a smaller engine though. What you really want is a 'Family 10' which is basically a 10 engine in a bootless bodyshell. But they only made this model for about a year and they're pretty rare.

Seen on Facebook but I haven't seen an official announcement yet.

So six months after the contract was awarded they've finally managed to work out what they're actually doing with the loco?!

It appears to me, from reading the wording of the article; that NSOL have contracted out the operation and promotion of FS, and that it will be running at heritage railways.

No mention of mainline railtours, or engineering base.

Many/most cars have a recommended service interval of xxx miles or yyy months, whichever comes sooner.

Resurrecting an OT thread drift, a Family 10 in need of restoration (but no doubt some idiots would be yelling "DO NOT PAINT!" on one particular forum) has just turned up on Car and Classic...

A lot of Plant Vehicles work on an Hours basis.
An Hourmeter is usually to be found somewhere for the operator to note down daily hours run.
However, when a vehicle is getting nowhere near Miles, Hours or months then A review of the amount of servicing required should be investigated.
MOD vehicles have been in this position often, some vehicles only clocking up an annual mileage from one end of the camp to the REME Servicing bay and back.
