GCR Loughborough Shed

I was sad to discover that over the weekend, that due to thefts inside the shed, the GCR have decided that this area is now out of bounds to the general public. However, people will still be able to see locomotives stabled outside the shed.

 

Unbelievable! You just cannot believe that so called enthusiasts would do such a thing! However I think this thread would be better in the
Heritage Railways and Centers section....

 

This is one of the bits i enjoy the most at loughborough

as usual its a minoroity that ruin it for the majority.

I hope the thieves can be caught

 

Without knowing the nature of what has been stolen it is hard make a suggestion, but if the items are of a substancial size then better control of the gate is possibly the answer, as they must have exited this way to a van. Or are we talking staff items, such as wallets in which case lockers with keys should be the answer. Either way they will be back if it is easy for them, and unlike us they will ignore any ban unless the entrance to the shed is manned.

 

Now that's a real bitch. Perhaps supervised tours are the answer?

 

I think tours would be the answer, I have only been in the shed once and it is a real shame this is the case.

They where probably not enthusiasts, just metal theives stealing a few bolts I would imagine.

 

Perhaps someone could let us know what was taken, in case it appears on the market and we can shop the scroates?

 

Perhaps they have sized up what to steal during open hours and have come back when the railway has closed. Eg the parts for Brocklebank Line, such as injectors which were stolen just before the loco left the railway. Of course, they could still size things up during a conducted tour!

 

That's a real pity - I thought the fact that the public were allowed to look around the shed was a big plus for the GCR, especially since fewer and fewer railways allow it, and most of those that do restrict it to viewing platforms.

Can't blame them if their hand has been forced by theft, but maybe organised tours (2 per Saturday for example?) would be a reasonable way of keeping the visiting going but with supervision? It would have the added bonus of allowing the railway to pass the hat round at the end of the tour as well rather than just leaving hopeful collection tins near various engines

I hope they do find a way of continuing to allow some public access to the shed - I was made up to find 'Witherslack Hall' at the back of the shed on my first visit, and wouldn't have been able to see it if access had been restrictred to the yard.
