Didn't the Lightning, upon demonstration, once prompt an outburst from a senior American military person along the lines of "whatever that is, I want ten NOW!", albeit somewhat more expletive-laden?

I don't see why not: after all, Green Arrow was a popular loco on tours until her forced retirement. I was lucky enough to see her operational in both LNER and BR liveries.

The V2s were far more powerful and would substitute for a Pacific without any problem, I think there is an incident recorded where one had to take over from an A4 on the Coronation and dropped only acouple of minutes on booked time.

Also the V2's have larger wheels which would approve them for 75MPH, 62005 and 61994 are limited by driving wheel size to 50MPH, so would driving wheel diameter play a part in limiting the approved speed ?, not so much an issue for Tornado at 6'8.

i dont quite understand the system but thought those guys we're allowed 60 ? A V4 would be a 60Mph but if Tornado gets the nod to go 90 the same process would allow the P2 83mph, the V4 76.
The West Highland line aside a V4 could be very useful - Class 5 power in a class 4 'envelope'

  6. There was only one true Typhoon and there will only ever be one true Tempest.

Why can't the military come up with original names? Can you imagine the outcry if it was proposed call a new jet the Spitfire? There would be questions in Parliament about 'is it a fitting tribute to those who served' and all sorts. Yet not a whimper when the Eurofighter was dubbed Typhoon II, despite the original's huge and vital role as a ground attack aircraft, with attendant sacrifice of lives by service personnel.

But there, I still call the Tornado the Panavia MRCA...

Never heard of that epithet being applied to the P38, even though it did have issues with compressibility (at M 0.68 apparently, whereas Spitfires were reputed to be good to approaching M 0.9).

Their were some nutters who objected to the name Typhoon in case it upset the Germans. I agree though, I always accociate the name with the WW2 tank buster.

Sorry to be pedantic again; the name that was objected to was 'Typhoon'. The WWII Hawker Tornado was a Rolls Royce Vulture powered version of the Hawker (Napier Sabre powered) Typhoon, which didn't frighten anyone, except possibly its test pilots.

The only pilot to survive structural failure in a typhoon was Diane Barnston Walker. She remained in the aircraft and landed it safely after the bottom dropped off.

She didn't bale out as she was wearing a skirt. ....

Glad to hear a V4 is being talked about. I put that in a thread about 'what would you like to see' ages ago. Is it just the talking stage or have they got further.

Apart from drawings and research I don't think anything will be done until the P2 is completed.
