Help needed please

I have added a lot of photo that i need help identifying please

Mostly they are N.E.R. outside frame locos

Any help with loco type and designer geatly appreciated

Loco to ID 5, in the other folder, is I think GNR(I) QLs class 4-4-0 no 127 formerly 'Erebus' at Dundalk, Adelaide, or Amiens St (someone on here can confirm).
In that folder To ID 1 is a Highland Castle, of the first batch. Someone should be able to identify the building behind - but probably Inverness or Perth as they didn't roam too far.

In your Outside Framed folder, img237 is a MR Johnson 4-4-0 no 151 (later 2P, not outside framed).
Img257 looks like a GSWR Smellie 4-4-0 but I am not an expert. It could be a NBR loco. The numberplate and company crest look quite clear and may give a clue.
Img261 is the Caledonian Single no 123 built by Neilson.
Img238 is fun - very early 4-4-0, no idea what though!

Img235 looks like an LNWR Allen straight-link 2-4-0 tank, I'd say somewhere on the Cromford & High Peak Line by the looks of it.
I stand to be corrected though!

I assume you mean 257 as 237 is certainly a Midland Johnson loco?
Looking again, 257 has a Matthew Stirling kind of look about it - I don't think he built any 4-4-0 for the G&SW so could that plate say SOUTH eastern? Otherwise it could be a Fletcher loco for the NER but I thought he didn't do any 4-4-0s. Mysterious...

 

257 is annotated as a South Eastern Railway "F" class, which it is. It was designed by James Stirling who was Patrick Stirling's brother.

I'm wondering whether 238 is in Britain. There's a building behind with shutters and balconies, a street name which could easily be "something de something", the loco has that odd square construction towards the rear of the boiler and seems to have a very tall chimney, and the stock looks slightly unusual to me. I wouldn't bet any money but...

 

How about this as a match?

 

I found this pic of Genoa. The background on the left is similar to image 238 but there is no signalbox.

 

That's got to be the same location. Even some of the large stones in the wall match up. I suspect its just west of the Piazza Principe station, but I had a quick look on Google Earth, and it looks as if we probably demolished most of the buildings in that area between 1942 and 1945.

It was all rather fortuitous really. I thought the loco in the image (which as you say did not look British) looked like something that The Locomotive would have covered at some stage, the only problem was not wanting to trawl through 50 odd years. The first volume I looked at, 1939, had a photo of a similar loco, and the next volume I picked up, 1907, had the image of Genoa. I assume that the signalbox was a later addition.
