    Peel again!

    All the money they have!

I scanned a shot last night that I took in 2001 looking up the river from Seaforth - two cathedrals - the Liver Building - the traditional world class river view of the city approaches that has welcomed generations of mariners.

What do you see now but Lego Tower blocks all piling money into the Whittaker coffers!

    They are a disgrace.

It's a shame that she won't fit through the locks in the south docks or through the bridge into Stanley Dock, out of Peel's clutches. There are several areas of the north docks closer to the Pier Head which will not be redeveloped for many years, surely Peel could put her in here, giving potential new owners a bit of breathing space.

This almost makes me cry. I loved visiting Historic Ships Birkenhead as a child and to think that, of the three ships one has been sawn into sections and another is off to the breakers despite her history. Soul destroying. Is there not space at Chatham, or Portsmouth?

Revolting behaviour, Liverpool should be stripped of its cultural status. No sense of history.

And in the 30th Anniversary year of the Falklands too.

We have the unfortunate situation on Merseyside where the museums are run by glory hunters, ego trippers & generally people who don't have a clue. Instead of spending a huge amount of money on the eyesore 'Museum of Liverpool Life, they could have built something far cheaper on one of the derelict dock sites , with the same exhibits inside & a collection of historic ships outside. The potential savings could have paid for 'Whimbrel' , 'Manxman' & the L.C.T. which has now been converted to a submarine in Birkenhead docks.I have omitted 'Plymouth' as she has no local relevance, but does deserve to be preserved somewhere.

Peel are a private investment group - nothing to do with the public sector - and it is Peel who are evicting the Plymouth

It just shows the contempt then sort of blood-sucking scum that Peel represent that they will probably send HMS Plymouth for scrap very close the 30th Anniversary of her role in the Falklands.

Thank goodness Britain isn't the sort of country that encourages such greed-driven low life by giving then tax cuts or low Corporate Tax rates.

    Oh, wait a minute...........

From a letter from Mike Critchley , who was the leading light in saving the ship, in this months Warships magazine, she was sold for next to nothing to the Warship Preservation Trust. Presumably, the obcenly well off Peel Holding will receive the proceeds of her scrapping, so this fine example of capitalism (that will be benefiting from Government Tax Cuts to the sort of tune that could pay for keeping HMS Plymouth, I am sure) will not only succeed in destroying another piece of maritime hsitory, but will profit from doing so.

    This makes me sick.

Perhaps supporters of HMS Plymouth should publicise what Peel have done (I presume they drove the Warship Preservation Trust into liquidation and seized the ship by charging excessive berthing fees), and also publicise what else Peel owns and encourage those who feel they are a bunch of greedy, moral-less scumbags to boycott anything to do with Peel. That may see a change in their attitude. Corporate greed only understand one thing - hit them in the only place or thing they care about - their ability to accumulate ever more of other peoples' money!

The situation that the Manxman is in is also directly down to Peel, who I can say, through twenty years of development dealings with them, know exactly the price of everything, and how to reduce costs and maximise profits like no other. Manxman as a hotel / conference centre / museum / restaurant and bar venue in Wirral Waters would have been stunning, but the unimaginitive philistines who populate Peel's development office couldn't see it for glass and steel Lego blocks like the ones that have obliterated the view of the Liver Building from Liverpool Bay, that has welcomed generations of Merseysiders home from the sea. They really are a bunch of profits above all else obsessed plonkers who's memorial will be trashy all to easily dating skylines of no architectural merit at all, like the pastiche facades of the Trafford Centre.

It is also true that they got there by buying up formerly public assets such as the Manchester Ship Canal and the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board just at the critical time when commerce was changing and dereliction of the old was about to become the seedcorn for the new. Right place at the right time.

If 'Plymouth' is sold for scrap it still leaves Peel with LCT7074 , which is sunk in the East Float . As they will have to raise this in order to remove it prior to any development , perhaps they could use some of their ill-gotten gains from 'Plymouth' to remove it to a place of safety, such as the former McTay shipyard at Bromborough (which is not under Peel control). It could then wait until the Heritage Lottery Fund starts giving out cash to proper projects instead of squandering it on the elitist Olympic Games (for which you need a lottery grant to purchase tickets for !).
Failing this they should at least give some of the money to other local projects, such as the 'Daniel Adamson'

    Bob.
