Just seen those two superb boats on the BBC News. Never been to Portsmouth, but pencilling in a short break to see Mary Rose, Victory, Warrior, and these two WW2 veterans.
Saw "Warrior" (the first "ironclad") on the recent Dan Snow series. Was not aware of it before then. Immense vessel.

Hopefully to be joined by HMS Caroline before too long.

Ah, I did wonder about HMS Caroline, which I think is First World War vintage. Where is that at present?

Hopefully not - we'd like to keep it thanks!!

46118 - Caroline is currently moored in the Alexandra dock in Belfast where she's been since 1924, and yes, she is the only floating survivor of the Battle of Jutland and the last remaining WW1 ship in service.

    Thanks Keith.

I wonder what the two 1930's built craft--the subject of the thread--have "under the bonnet"? Anyone know? Must be something big and poweful to give them the speed which they still appear to be able to acheive.

Not too sure in these cases but the later ones had Rolls-Royce Meteors.

<<Edit>> HSL 102 has Napier Sea Lions - classy
    MGB 81 has ' 1250 HP Packards'

Would the Packards be US built Meteors? They built an awful lot of Merlins in WW2.

Apparently they were 'Liberty' engines (as also produced by Nuffields for tank use) - I wondered the same thing myself but someone came up with the info on the 'Flypast' forum.
