I have just seen on another site that Jim Carter passed away on Monday the 14 February .

He will be remembered as one of the best photographers from the last days of steam being a footplate man gave him access to produce some unique pictures .

I'm very sorry to hear that. I visited Jim on a number of occassions to get material for the SMF Archive. He was an amazing character with a shed full of anecdotes about the days of steam, and an amazing memory for detail. He also had a tremendous number of models, some up to 3.5 inch gauge, displayed on his sideboard!

I always found him to be a gentleman, but I know he's been ill for many years. My condolences to his family.

There seems to be a bit of a crowd at the"top of the ladder" lately with Jim Cater, Gerald Boden and Peter Fox leaving us - and each having contributed to our hobby in their own unique way. As a photographer I enjoyed his work, as an outsider I enjoyed his tales from the inside, as a person he will be much missed; as usual condolences to his family.

I know this sounds terrible but many of our Steam Era Heroes are now getting somewhat senior in years . I hope that they have many more years in them yet (in good health) but there will sadly be more of these sad news items in the months and years to come
