LMS Jinty 47493 bowed out of service on January 1st following 10 years in traffic on the Spa Valley Railway.

We were extremely lucky with the loco's reliability over this time with long periods out of traffic mainly due to planned maintenance programmes.

We hope to commence the overhaul immediately with a further period of operation after it's completed. I will try my best to provide updates on here at regular intervals.

In the meantime, the SVR is on the lookout for a replacement steam loco capable of hauling 4-5 coaches over 5 miles. We had lined something up but this has unfortunately fallen through. If anyone knows of anything that might be available please let me know.

    Matt

I believe Ian Riley had recently purchased a Jinty not that long ago, could be an idea loco for you, though whether it already has commitments or not, I cannot say for sure.

47406 1744 are both GCR and whilst gala appearances have been regular neither have so far done season long loans

With the other Pannier currently of action I do expect it will be available.

How far off completion are the Terrier and J94 at the Spa Valley? Or does the Jinty need less work to return to working condition ?

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I will answer them as follows.

Another Jinty would be ideal for us to hire for a season if one is available. Unfortuantely Ian Riley has been quoted as saying elsewhere that 47298 must make a living when it comes back and this means working almost 7 days a week. We cannot offer this all the time as our season is predominantly weekends with Thursdays and Fridays high summer also.

We enquired about Joem but the group understandably want to keep it closer to home.

3650 is required at Didcot; again another ideal loco for our operation is a Pannier.

I don't think we have contacted GCR yet.

Our most important time will be August to September as 'Ugly' is due to come out for her annual inspection.

As for the in-house fleet, 'Sutton' will hopefully start to progress significantly in 2014. We have been held back waiting for the new cylinder block to be finished. This has now happened and it is on site so fitting can now commence. This will in turn, allow the axleboxes to progress. I will see if I can post a photo later of the block. Due to other more important commitments, the J94 has stalled a little but should start to progress again soon once it has moved to a new home in the 75F shed which is due to happen next week.

Due to the way the Jinty has been financed over the last 10 years, she has a significant overhaul fund and is seen as the ideal loco for our operation. Therefore we are very keen to get her back into traffic as quickly as possible.

B473 is currently out of service. There are plans for a repair but if that is successful, she will be fully occupied on the Bluebell and there is zero chance of a long-term hire, even to friends just down the road.

Young Railwayyman - I suggest you pause for deeper thought! Just because a loco is about the right size and steamable does not make it available for hire. The vast majority of locos are needed on the lines that they ate based on. 80104 and 30053 are the mainstays at Swanage, for example. In the case of other locos such as the NYMR's 29 it may be that the Spa Valley is too far away from home for their owning groups to be able provide support - most will want an owners rep on hand when the loco is steamed.
