Shame. Would be great to see another pre-grouper running. They seem to be rather out of fashion at the moment (with even those which are running being mainly in later liveries).
Will be good to see 85 at least.

Replacement tender bodies aren't a big deal nowadays.

Looking at the pictures it seems to be the tender itself which needs some work.

  6. Yes both above contributors may well be correct but I am told it is almost back to the condition it was in when rescued from Barry. A couple more pictures uploaded at.

That looks miles better than any Barry refugee I've ever seen pre restoration.

I would have to agree - and if they restored it from Barry condition 1st time round it should be a lot easier the second time. If you use them they wear out, this is no different to many other.

as a fair few BR1 tenders are currently required, might be cheaper to build a new BR1 chassis and do a swop with 73129....

  10. Indeed however I think they were referring to the internal condition.

So what they're saying is "it's knackered."

  12. Well pretty bad shape. The Yank S100 needs a new firebox and has been discarded are a restoration project so I am guessing the 8F may well be in similar sort of condition. Copper had sky rocketed in price and new fireboxes are pretty much out of the question.

So, how come a new inner firebox is being made for 41241?

  14. A very good question! Maybee 41241 being one of the very first and of course one of only four of which only two others are viable and of course British. But who knows the logic

So 30072 isn't only one of four too or the other first train loco?
Might be more to do with the usefulness after restoration, ownership, or the wishes of the restoring team?
Why isn't the fourth Ivatt viable.?Seem to remember not too long ago 46447 was for spares........and running in 9 days.

Since when has anything America built in the war carried any form of precious metal...
S160's came with 1 set of gauges and didn't even come with working brakes.

  17. Just posted a much earlier picture of 48431 in her days in steam. The loco has a different tender and I wonder if it was borrowed from the Derby 4f. Looks like a Fowler tneder
You can see the picture at

41241 is being done up for the 50th Celebrations in 2018, some would argue that they'll spend a lot of money on something where the money could be used to go towards other projects - but like you said - it will be good for the 50th and perhaps the loco crews like it as a good runner.

Think 30072 is owned by the same guy / team that own City of Wells. It did say in the last Push and Pull that he would like to turn his attention to the Pub (I think) and then 72 - but I'm not sure if that was all said tongue in cheek...

If the 4th Ivatt you mean is 78022 - they're planning on assessing that after 75078 is completed. That is owned by the standard 4 Society so I presume that they will put some money towards the cost of overhaul.
