FS has been painted two shades of green and black, the popularity among the public has been constant throughout. The press hype does a lot more than a coat of paint

In my experience, most people say that without paying an extravagant price, usually adding that their Dad/Grandad drove it, as well.

One of my oppo's in the Urie Soc says that you have to admire the LNER PR machine. Nearly a century later and it's still working.

There’s a lot of truth in that. The LNER were good at projecting the wonderful service of high speed streamlined trains but, by all accounts, travel on anything else was a fairly miserable experience

They probably had the same PR agency as the Welsh steam coal industry

The French have taken the same approach. TGVs are good. Local travel? Good luck! Services that don't connect, only run part of the route, or don't run at all because the timetable has a six hour gap in the middle of the day for engineering works. That's in addition to the six hour gap overnight!

Everything I have read about the LNER in wartime leads me to suspect there was an awful lot riding on the PR machine pre second world war, and the chickens came home to roost rather firmly in 1940 and 1941 when maintenance, availability and workshop spcae was at a premium.

There is absolutely no doubting, I hope, that the railway scene would have been a lot less colourful without Gresley's flair and panache. Dare I say, much poorer too. How many of us had a Triang/Hornby or Dublo Flying Scotsman, Sir Nigel Gresley or Mallard? Hmmm.

All readily available on eBay, the old Hornby/Tri-ang ones or the updated detailed versions depending on your price point.

Hornby have continued to manufacture models of the Bullieds and Castles to this day. The most modern toolings look quite impressive, I've been tempted to get the odd one for myself....

I have seen a black 5 which looks really good. I wonder what the best engine model is for how it looks and how well it runs

There's no one answer to that these days, pretty much everything manufactured in the last 10-15 years runs very sweetly and is accurate to prototype, except, IMO, (and to get us back on topic sort of!) Hornby's rendition of GWR and BR green:

Which looks awfully washed out to my eyes.

Highly unlikely, if there ever was it would have been during WW2 when the GWR painted most engines that required repainting black instead of the usual green. Kings, Castles and Stars were exempt from this, but you never know, some may have slipped through, this site only says "Some" http://www.gwr.org.uk/liveriesloco1942.html

Well no less pointless than most of the rest of the thread, at least someone's possibly learning something! :)
