To move this slightly off off subject did someone say earlier about an ex LSWR H16 tank?
Actually that would be easier than you think,
I assume that the frames,Wheels & cylinders are the same as the S15 , So i should think is the boiler,
Well at Grosmont are the wheels and frames of 847 and at Ropley is a spare boiler , As long as the owners of both could be persquaded to part with their bits for say the resulting engine to spend some time at either railway during its return you could have an H16 running in a very short time span than making one from scratch

Martin, this makes a change from the GWR pick and mix projects. You need to look at the general arrangement drawings first.

    Re: L1 new build

Even if there are detail differences i would think that you could make a very convincing loco from a set of S15 frames and an urie pattern boiler, i hope i got the number of the Grosmont engine right would hate to have some one from the bluebell:laser: me of course it would need the essex loco society and Urie LPS to get their heads together, but how good would it be to see an H16 on the MHR freight or pounding up on the moors

    Re: L1 new build

Grrr 847 is at Sheffield Park and should run this year. 825, 830 & 841 are at Grosmont. 841 ran for a long time but the frames are knackered, 830 left Barry sans boiler and tender and 825 was stripped to the bone at Barry before going to Bluebell as potentially a King Arthur conversion.

    Only joking on the Grrr...

    Re: L1 new build

:attention: Actually, 830 was complete when it left barry, it was this engine that was going to be rebuilt into an king Arthur, its 841's frames i am on about 825 was the one without the boiler ,this was going to go to sea&sail and have a new boiler but it fell though the boiler off 825 went onto 506 when it was first restored

    Re: L1 new build

.... sounds like a whole better bet than an L1 so far .... mind you they were designed for short haul goods transfer, but with 5ft 7in drivers they should be OK at heritage speeds.

Suggest the H16 stuff be moved off the L1 thread as it seems to have a life of its own already :)

Am I correct in saying the H16 tanks worked on the Fawley branch and then returned to Feltham.

    Yes.
30516 and 30517 were moved to Eastleigh in February 1960. 30518, 30519 and 30520 followed in February 1961. 30519 returned to Feltham in March. The others went back to Feltham in May 1961.
All were withdrawn in November 1962

Do you mean that they worked from Feltham , or that tsome were shedded at Eastleigh?
It does seem a shame though that there is this spare set of frames and a boiler thats spare and i expect that the tractive effort would be the same as an S15 , if using the same boiler and cylinders as fitted to the S15's how suitible would one be to either the MHR or NYMR ?

Duh, You are absolutely right. 830 and 825 round the wrong way. Going to the back of the class with the conical 'D' cap...

Thank's for that link, so 5 were built and some think it's worth building one, why? what did they have that many other similar tanks of the same size did not have.

The Urie S15 group looked into building an H16 with S15 bits many years ago, but nothing came of the idea.

That is correct. As a kid I would spend my summer holidays in the New Forest and remember them well at Fawley. I even 'cabbed' 30516 in 1960 when my Uncle, who was a marvelous engineer, went to show the crew his scratchbuilt M7. Oh happy days.

    Re: L1 new build

Unusual wheel arrangement for a tank; a 'big beast'; another potential Southern project to water down the glut of GWR subjects; parts are potentially available; standardised parts so easier to bulk-buy with other Urie locomotive owning groups; can cope very well with gradients; were occasionally used on passenger trains; tells the untold story of hump shunting on the Southern, how many 6F locomotives were preserved? Oh, to build a G16 4-8-0T to go with it!

    Re: L1 new build

Its the whole thing that most of the bits would , or could be availible, the Essex loco group, who own 841 I assume will want to get started on 830, before 825 'S ticket is up and rather than having another S15 why not by using the bits from 841 with the boiler that is spare , recreate a lost class that would certainly be as useful as its tender counterpart , Yes there are a lot of parts that are Standard between the H16, S16 and king Arthurs so its got to be cheeper than building another large tank loco from scratch

and who could do the work, well it could be split between Ropley once the urie group have got 506 out with grosmont overhauling the frames and sending it down to Ropley to be finished assuming that it can leap frog 499 it could always borrow the motion made for 499 and later another set could be made for 499 along with the motion for 830
Plus as a passinger tank it could be turned out in any livery from LSWR light green to BR black i prefer Southern lined green myself

Don't forget that a new rear frame section would have to be built and welded in place.

    Re: L1 new build

I can't see the Urie group at Ropley allowing another loco to jump in front of 30499. The idea is to get 499 and 506 running together. There is now an appeal out for the restoration of 30499.
