    Re: LU 150 plans...

Now can you see why I was a little nervous about posting the information? I've got photos of 30587 when it was delivered on Thursday, but I'm holding off posting them as it is a bit obvious from them where it is being stored! Really looking forward to the specials in 2013 now :)

    Regards,

    Dan

Flickr user 'Bowroaduk' has uploaded some photo's of the train at other locations, such as this one of 30587 at Edgware Road.

I feel that it would have been better if you had just kept quiet rather than posting patronizing replies to others.

    Re: LU 150 plans...

The moderators had a specific request to remove information posted which LU had marked as not for public distribution . Because of the late hour the thread was removed temporarily .

Personally I think it was the right thing to do

I think to lock or remove the thread if the request had come from LUL would have been reasonable, to allow non moderators to patronize other members is not

Have to chuckle about this. Info was all over the internet regarding what was going on. About the only thing not published was the identity of the loco and even that was announced at a local railway club meeting - OK so it was the wrong Well Tank - yet we had people saying "I've seen the loco but I can't tell you" and such. All rather silly IMHO.

    Re: LU 150 plans...

A fascinating combination of stock there - but the big isue for me is that there is a world of difference between a loco in light steam like this and a full-blown hard-working run with a load on! I wonder what value these tests added, rather than a proper exhaust test?

Im not so sure it was light steam as such, as you can see on the Baker Street clip the regulator is opened on departure and i'd be willing to bet the safety valves were made to lift deliberatly rather than it being a coincidence.

It seems it was made to blow off for quite a while in the station, plus other trains were run past to see if there was any effect on them. Hopefully the results were positive, the reports seem to give that impression.

    Re: LU 150 plans...

Just because someone publishes or announces something doesn't mean that it should be posted online - particularly when the forum they are posting it on belongs to someone else. Word-of-mouth is one thing, but posting information on a web forum with thousands of members is totally different. Natpres has developed very good relationships with many railway operators over the years, but this can easily be damaged by a few careless posts.

Personally, I'm impressed at LUL's commitment to recreating steam-hauled trains next year. It's been a few decades since steam went underground and there have been lots of expensive electronic systems installed since then, not forgetting the various smoke/fire detection systems.

    Re: LU 150 plans...

Thanks to 5944 and David1984 for the info/pointers. Looking at the video, I can see a good amount of steam being produced, but, the real problem would be with smoke - in the warm environment of the underground, steam will very rapidly disperse and evaporate, whereas smoke lingers and spreads, and it is smoke (and quite small amounts, at that) which will activate the fire systems (i.e. the smoke detectors). Of course, these could be isolated for the duration of the train's passing (subject to permission and mitigations being put in place), which would leave the way clear for a linear pea-souper!

Here's hoping that this momentous event can be pulled off.

I fully respect those who are in a position of not being able to pass on confidential info but it still amuses me that some of these people feel the need to post along the lines of "I know something but can't tell you."

Fair enough, I made an error of judgement. I will follow the 'post nothing at all' approach in future :(

I agree with Spamcan. If you can't post something then why just make a post to say you can't?

Full marks to LUL for having a go with steam as well. An organisation that takes pride in its heritage, especially when NR is ripping out the triangle at York for little benefit.

    Re: LU 150 plans...

I would deplore that attitude too but I don't think anyone did that in this thread. One poster announced (complete with timings) that an interesting working was taking place. Another person kindly added a little more information together with a reasonable explanation of why he couldn't say more, just for a short time. So it was more like "I can't give the full story yet but watch this space!" I did, it was good and I thank both posters for giving us forewarning of good news to come! I hope subsequent comments haven't driven these people away from contributing altogether.
