Wow......... I see that Blodge has resorted to a lump hammer for the Joy gear!

Roger, I would like to thank you for making all your photos available for us poor mortals to follow progress.

Yep, running boards and a tender will sort this hideous design of steam train out.
That's how everything fits together, along with the gas.

OK....it really is happening. As a modeller in 009, I absolutely HATE Joy valve gear. What is worse, I can find nowhere on the internet, what each part is called.
Can anyone explain why the MWs had Joy in the first place and what advantages (if any) and disadvantages the gear had over others?

Advantages - saving on weight & frictional resistance, due to the lack of eccentrics.

Disadvantages - Weakening of the connecting rod, expansion link prone to wear, causing irregular valve events.

There's plenty of diagrams/ explanations out there. Try the LMS engineman's handbook, which is pretty easy to obtain.

Its going to look fabulous when its complete isn't it ? There is something about the L&B Loco's that makes them look so right aesthetically.

Also add to the mix that Joy dose not have such a low ground clearance as Stephensons, which is very important for narrow gauge outside framed engines which can be considerable wider than the track. Imagine a loose rock in the wrong place. Bagnal Price and Bagule gear were developed for just this reasion, but post date the building of the original three L&B engines.

Send them a load of money and you might get one.

Bits are being painted and fitted.

Lyd is booked for ROTS inspection in the next week or so. Keep your eyes peeled for photos from the FR's "usual suspects" shortly...

Paul Lewin has recently made a fairly comprehensive post re: Lyd on the L&B discussion group, which is worth a read if you are interested.

Most impressive thing about Lyd is that, from the back, it's more imposing than an NG/G16. It's a big one. Good looking though.
